India’s Green Steel Initiative: A Step Towards Sustainable Production
A one-day Chintan Shivir, aimed at steering discussions on green steel production in India, took place at the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) in Mandi Gobindgarh. This pivotal event was inaugurated by Shri Sandeep Poundrik, Secretary of the Ministry of Steel, alongside high-ranking officials, experts, and industry representatives who engaged in comprehensive deliberations.
In his keynote address, Shri Sandeep Poundrik emphasized the vital role of the secondary steel sector, which significantly contributes nearly 47% to India’s total steel production. He remarked on India’s unique position as the only nation witnessing an annual growth of 8-10% in production, consumption, and installed capacity. Poundrik commended NISST’s efforts in bolstering the secondary steel sector, noting that the institute is actively conducting training programs twice monthly across various steel clusters throughout the country. Notably, NISST has been designated as the nodal agency for green steel certification and has already issued green steel certificates to 76 companies, amounting to 10.98 million tonnes.
Poundrik also disclosed that the Ministry of Steel is developing an incentive scheme designed to support technology advancements within the secondary steel sector, ultimately aiming to lower carbon emissions. Joining him, Shri Daya Nidhan Pandey, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Steel and NISST Chairman, reiterated the importance of NISST in enhancing the capacity of the secondary steel industry.
Focus on Low-Carbon Technologies
The Chintan Shivir 2026 provided an in-depth platform to explore emerging low-carbon technologies pertinent to the steel sector. Discussions ranged from the innovative use of green hydrogen in blast furnaces to reduce COâ‚‚ emissions to the application of hydrogen in rotary kiln iron-making processes. Moreover, the event addressed the implementation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) within the secondary steel sector to minimize reliance on the grid and optimize the utilization of off-peak renewable energy.
Participants also examined the potential of vertical shaft-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production, which utilizes water gas as a reductant. This method is expected to enhance fuel and raw material flexibility while significantly lowering emissions. Additionally, the forum reviewed export opportunities for alloy steel products amidst the challenges posed by the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
Pathway to Sustainable Growth
The gathering showcased a collaborative environment where policymakers, industry leaders, and technical experts converged to share insights and identify pathways toward sustainable green steel production. The discussions were geared toward fostering innovation and addressing the challenges that lie ahead in the transition to greener steel manufacturing practices.
