India’s Food Processing Ecosystem Strengthened at Udaipur Summit

The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) brought together key stakeholders to explore innovative solutions for India’s food processing sector during a two-day _Chintan Shivir_ held in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Chaired by Union Minister Shri Chirag Paswan, this gathering included senior representatives from 22 Central Ministries, 27 State Governments, industry members, academic institutions, and organizations like Invest India. The event emphasized a collaborative approach to enhance India’s food processing ecosystem through policy reforms and strategic actions aimed at boosting the country’s agricultural value chain.

Vision for a Competitive Food Sector

In his inaugural address, Minister Paswan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to cultivating a modern and inclusive food processing sector that benefits farmers, minimizes post-harvest losses, and fosters job creation. He underscored the importance of food processing as a key element in strengthening value chains, expanding exports, and positioning India as a trusted provider of high-quality food products.

Targeted Discussions and Recommendations

The _Chintan Shivir_ featured in-depth discussions across six thematic groups focusing on critical areas such as doubling food processing levels over the next five years, bolstering processed food exports, and reinforcing food safety standards. The participants proposed actionable solutions, including enhancing farm-level aggregation, increasing processing capacities, and building robust logistics infrastructures to improve quality standards.

To boost exports, the groups suggested developing an integrated digital platform for market intelligence, promoting ‘Brand India’, and leveraging international trade opportunities. Furthermore, they called for the establishment of a National Food Processing Promotion Council to implement systematic reforms and support the development of new food technologies.

Sharing Best Practices for Growth

State representatives shared successful initiatives and innovative policies designed to advance the food processing sector. Uttar Pradesh emphasized its roadmap to double processing capacity through various incentives and infrastructure development. Maharashtra showcased its leadership in supporting women-led enterprises and promoting fortified foods, while Andhra Pradesh presented successful value-chain interventions in specific agricultural sectors.

Other states, including Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, highlighted efforts toward governance reform and creating competitive incentives to attract investment in food processing. The collaborative sharing of strategies contributed to a rich exchange of ideas and regional learning.

New Initiatives and Future Directions

During the summit, Minister Paswan also inaugurated the Common Incubation Facility aimed at processing minor forestry products, which is expected to support local entrepreneurs and promote sustainable practices. Concluding the event, he praised the collective contributions of all participants and emphasized the importance of timely implementation of the developed recommendations.

The Minister called for a synergistic approach among stakeholders to achieve the government’s objective of establishing India as a global leader in food processing, ensuring that both the industry and agriculture sectors thrive together.
