India’s Fight Against Malnutrition: A Collective Responsibility

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, called for a united national effort to combat malnutrition, emphasizing that tackling this issue should be a shared responsibility among the government, corporations, communities, and individuals. Speaking at a CSR Conclave on Nutrition organized by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in New Delhi, Goyal stated that eradicating malnutrition is critical for creating a developed India (Viksit Bharat) and for securing the country’s long-term social and economic well-being.

During his address, Shri Goyal highlighted the unique potential of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a means to merge business and social impact, particularly in the fight against malnutrition. He pointed out that while the law mandates companies to allocate 2 percent of their net profits to CSR, this should be viewed as a minimum rather than a restriction, framing CSR as a meaningful opportunity for societal contribution.

A Call for Enhanced Collaboration

Emphasizing the culturally ingrained spirit of service in India, Goyal noted that many businesses voluntarily donate far more than their legal obligations require. This current initiative serves as a reminder for all stakeholders to ramp up their efforts against malnutrition.

Minister of State for Cooperation, Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar, also addressed the conclave, describing CSR as a potent tool for social transformation that goes beyond mere philanthropy to become a strategic investment in society. He lauded programs like Shishu Sanjeevani, illustrating how CSR investments can yield measurable social change through local engagement and transparent operations.

Coordinated Government Efforts

Shri Piyush Goyal emphasized that a multifaceted approach is required to tackle the complex issues of malnutrition, citing the collaborative efforts of various ministries, including Commerce and Industry, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, and Women and Child Development. This inter-ministerial coordination follows the Prime Minister’s vision for a whole-of-government strategy, which enhances program efficacy and societal impact.

According to Goyal, the NDDB has been pivotal in fostering partnerships between government and industry. He noted that crucial nutritional resources such as milk and fish must be accessible and affordable for all, especially for vulnerable populations.

Addressing Root Causes

The Minister pointed out that the Ministry of Women and Child Development plays a vital role in tackling the underlying causes of malnutrition, advocating for adequate nutrition during pregnancy and early childhood. He stressed that ensuring nutritional support during these critical periods is key to improving long-term health outcomes.

Goyal further remarked that initiatives must reach every corner of the country, reinforcing the message that all stakeholders should cooperate to achieve widespread impact. The involvement of Panchayati Raj institutions is also crucial to ensure that these nutritional programs reach local populations effectively.

The Importance of Innovation and Involvement

As the government aims to address malnutrition through innovation, Goyal underscored that a collaborative effort from corporate entities is essential for sustained progress. He urged businesses to see investments in nutrition as an investment in the country’s future workforce and economic health.

Appealing to the media, Goyal invited coverage of CSR-led nutritional initiatives, emphasizing the dual benefits for businesses and society. Additionally, he called for a grassroots movement against malnutrition, encouraging individuals to seize personal milestones as opportunities to contribute socially.

As India endeavors to uplift millions out of poverty, Goyal reaffirmed the necessity of unified action against malnutrition. He asserted that no child should suffer from malnutrition or birth-related diseases, highlighting the government’s commitment to innovative solutions and societal participation towards achieving a malnutrition-free India. The Minister welcomed fresh ideas and constructive feedback from the public, expressing confidence that collective efforts could successfully eradicate malnutrition in the country.
