India’s Electricity Demand Soars, Fueling Economic Aspirations
India’s electricity consumption has seen significant growth, reflecting the country’s ambitions of becoming a global power. The increasing demand for electricity is crucial for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat. Over the past four years, the industrial consumption of electricity surged from 320 billion units (BU) in FY 21 to approximately 418 BU in FY 25, demonstrating a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 7%.
This rise in electricity demand signifies a growing economy with enhanced productivity and improved living standards, not just in urban areas but also in rural regions. Key government initiatives, including the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), have fortified distribution infrastructure and improved supply reliability, which are essential for meeting industrial needs and sustaining growth.
Industrial and Commercial Growth Aligns with Government Initiatives
The surge in industrial growth, particularly within sectors like manufacturing, steel, and cement, relies heavily on consistent and cost-effective electricity supply. The government’s initiatives such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat position India to emerge as a leading global manufacturing hub. A dependable power sector fosters competitiveness, attracting foreign investments and integrating India into global supply chains.
Industrial electricity consumption is projected to rise from 380 BU in FY 23 to 418 BU in FY 25 at a CAGR of 5%. Conversely, commercial consumers are expected to see a more robust CAGR of 10%, indicating ongoing demand from the service sector.
Open Access Power Transactions Rise
The electricity consumption patterns reveal an interesting shift. The recent strong monsoon season, which brought unprecedented rainfall, temporarily impacted various consumer goods markets. However, with the implementation of GST 2.0 reforms, the economy is set for a swift recovery, driving growth in specific sectors.
To improve competitiveness, industrial consumers are now able to access affordable electricity through open access, which allows them to procure power according to their operational needs. In FY 25, open access consumption jumped from 32.5 BU to 43.2 BU, marking a remarkable increase of over 32.8% year-over-year. The trend is expected to continue into FY 26, as consumption in the first half reached 27,892 million units, a 45.2% increase compared to the same period in FY 25.
Captive Power Consumption Continues to Rise
Increasing self-reliance is evident as captive electricity consumption among commercial and industrial users rose from 176 BU in FY 23 to 196 BU in FY 25, reflecting a steady CAGR of 6%. This growth underscores the strong demand for electricity.
Domestic electricity consumption also accelerated, moving from a growth rate of 4.8% in FY 24 to 9.8% in FY 25, driven by urbanization and higher household electrification. States such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi have significantly contributed to this growth, showcasing improved living standards.
