India’s Commerce Minister Strengthens Ties with Europe During 5-Day Visit
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, recently wrapped up a significant five-day visit to Spain, Belgium, Finland, and Estonia from July 13 to 18, 2026. His trip, accompanied by a prominent delegation of Indian business leaders, aimed to enhance India’s economic partnerships with Europe, expand investment opportunities, and boost technology cooperation. This visit was a continuation of the positive momentum created by the successful conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
In Spain, Shri Goyal engaged in fruitful discussions with key officials including H.E. Mr. Carlos Cuerpo Caballero, the First Vice-President and Minister of Economy, and H.E. Mr. Jordi Hereu Boher, Minister of Industry and Tourism. He proposed an annual India-Spain Joint Commission meeting to foster business collaboration. Furthermore, both nations agreed to explore interoperability between India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Spain’s Bizum digital payment system. They identified numerous sectors for potential collaboration, including pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and infrastructure, pushing forward mutual interests.
Moving on to Brussels, Shri Goyal co-chaired the third Ministerial Meeting of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council. The adoption of the 2026-2027 TTC Action Plan was a highlight, which included the approval of 21 more Indian fishery establishments, raising the total to 625. The minister also urged for the inclusion of Indian ship recycling yards in the listings, alongside discussions on the Investment Protection Agreement and Geographical Indications Agreement.
In Finland, Goyal met with top government officials and discussed expanding cooperation in advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum technology. He highlighted India’s potential to partner with Finland’s technological expertise, particularly in areas like clean energy and advanced manufacturing. Goyal encouraged Finnish giants like KONE and Nokia to expand their operations and investments in India.
The visit concluded in Estonia with discussions focusing on digital governance and cybersecurity collaboration. Goyal participated in the India-Estonia Business Forum, where he encouraged strengthening ties in clean energy and emerging technologies. The Estonian government expressed its intent to support the early implementation of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
Throughout the visit, Goyal held extensive dialogues with various business leaders, stressing the importance of building resilient supply chains and facilitating investments. His efforts are expected to pave the way for enhanced technology partnerships and increased market access for Indian exporters, contributing to India’s growing economic footprint in Europe.
