India’s Bioenergy Revolution: Key Insights from National Workshop
The Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power emphasized the crucial role of bioenergy in India’s transition to clean energy, particularly for decarbonizing industrial heat in the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) sector. Speaking at a national workshop titled ‘Introduction and Adoption of Biomass for Green Steam and Heat Applications in MSMEs,’ the Minister shared insights into how bioenergy is set to transform India’s energy landscape.
Hosted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, in partnership with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and Grant Thornton Bharat, the workshop served as a platform to release the report, “Decarbonizing MSMEs: Use of Biomass for Green Steam and Heat Application.” This report marks a significant step toward understanding how bioenergy can effectively alleviate the energy demands of India’s industries.
Bioenergy’s Growing Importance
In his keynote address, the Minister noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has seen unprecedented progress in the renewable energy sector over the past ten years. Bioenergy has evolved from a minor player to a central component of the nation’s clean energy strategy.
He highlighted that bioenergy’s benefits extend beyond just power generation, contributing to various national interests like energy security, rural livelihoods, waste management, and climate action. The Minister pointed out that although MSMEs are responsible for nearly one-third of India’s manufacturing output and provide jobs for millions, much of their heat and steam energy continues to depend on fossil fuels like coal and furnace oil. This reliance needs to shift toward clean, renewable sources.
A Pathway to Sustainable Energy
During his speech, the Minister advocated for biomass-based solutions as a practical and scalable means to address the energy challenges faced by MSMEs. He cited India’s vast resources of agricultural waste, animal byproducts, and municipal solid waste as ample opportunities to convert waste into viable energy, lower emissions, and add income sources for farmers and rural entrepreneurs.
The government’s integrated strategy includes initiatives like the National Bioenergy Programme, SATAT, and GOBARdhan, which focus on supporting various biomass applications tailored for MSMEs. This also involves coordinating efforts with the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Key Insights from the Workshop
The Minister underscored the report’s significance, as it offers a detailed, data-driven approach for integrating biomass-based green heat and steam solutions across several industries including textiles, food processing, and chemicals. The findings of the report emphasize essential policy frameworks and market incentives, promoting the use of biomass while enhancing supply chain dynamics.
Highlighting the need for cooperation across the biomass value chain, the Minister stated that building trust and ensuring fuel availability would be critical for MSMEs to thrive in this transition.
Collaboration and Future Prospects
Shri Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, echoed the message of bioenergy’s potential across the nation. He spoke of various biomass applications, from waste-to-energy projects to decentralized biogas plants, that can support rural economies and promote clean energy access. The Secretary urged for stronger biomass supply chains and increased investment in research and development.
The workshop attracted numerous stakeholders, including officials from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, representatives from the German Embassy, industry leaders, MSMEs, and financial institutions, all eager to explore the future of biomass in India’s clean energy narrative.
