India’s Ambitious AI Strategy Aims for Global Leadership

India is set to reshape its technology landscape with a pioneering AI strategy inspired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision to democratize technology access. Launched in 2024, the IndiaAI Mission strives to tackle challenges unique to the nation while generating economic growth and job opportunities for all citizens.

Strengthening the AI Ecosystem

The IndiaAI Mission is committed to creating a robust and inclusive artificial intelligence ecosystem that aligns with the country’s developmental aspirations. At the core of this initiative is the creation of a sovereign foundational AI model, which is being developed in collaboration with twelve organizations and consortia, including notable names like Sarvam AI, IIT Bombay Consortium (BharatGen), and Tech Mahindra Maker’s Lab.

During the IndiaAI Impact Summit 2026, several sovereign models demonstrated impressive performances, particularly in benchmarks for Indic languages. These models are expected to enhance the open-source ecosystem, facilitating innovation among startups and researchers across India.

Making AI Accessible

The government is also addressing the need for affordable compute resources for AI development. Currently, 38,231 GPUs have been made available through a collaboration with fourteen empaneled service providers, offered at subsidized rates averaging around Rs 65 per GPU per hour.

This initiative is complemented by the provision of essential AI development services, including storage and networking solutions, tailored to foster the growth of AI applications.

Global Expansion for Startups

To facilitate international outreach, the IndiaAI Startups Global program has been initiated in partnership with Station F and HEC Paris. Ten Indian AI startups have been selected to tap into European markets, showcasing innovative solutions across governance, smart cities, document intelligence, and enterprise automation.

This program emphasizes the rising potential of India’s AI startup ecosystem in crafting practical applications.

Tackling Local Issues with AI

The mission also prioritizes the development of thirty AI applications targeting critical areas such as agriculture, health, climate change, and natural disaster management. Collaborative efforts have led to hackathons and innovation challenges with several governmental departments, resulting in ten startups being recognized for scaling their solutions.

AI Centres of Excellence to Fuel Innovation

In a bid to elevate AI education, the government is establishing Artificial Intelligence Centres of Excellence (AI-CoEs) across states and union territories. These centers will offer targeted talent development programs to equip professionals with skills in emerging technologies.

In addition, seven CoEs focusing on sectors like Gaming, AR/VR, and Blockchain have been set up, providing a multidimensional approach to talent nurturing.

Ensuring Responsible AI Development

To promote ethical AI practices, the IndiaAI Safety Institute has been launched, focusing on safety, security, and building trust among diverse stakeholders. A series of Responsible AI Projects are underway, addressing issues such as AI bias mitigation and privacy-enhancing tools.

Fostering AI Research and Development

The government is also committed to strengthening the AI research ecosystem in India. By supporting 500 PhD fellows, 5,000 postgraduates, and providing additional resources across 27 Data and AI Labs in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, it aims to establish a robust pipeline of AI talent.

With over 250 fellowships awarded under this initiative, the groundwork is being laid for high-quality AI research.

This multifaceted approach encapsulates India’s resolve to not only harness the power of AI but also to position itself as a global leader in the artificial intelligence domain.
