Indian Railways Revamps Services with New Trains and Speed Enhancements
Indian Railways has launched an array of improvements under the Timetable of Trains (TAG) 2026, introducing new train services, extending existing ones, and speeding up numerous routes across its railway zones. The initiative aims to enhance convenience and efficiency for passengers, showcasing a robust commitment to modernizing rail travel.
Expanded Train Services Across Regions
Under the TAG 2026 program, the Central Railway (CR) zone saw the launch of 4 new trains, extension of 6 services, and acceleration of 30 trains. Similarly, the East Coast Railway (ECOR) introduced 4 fresh train services, extended 4 more, and improved the speed of 3 trains. The East Central Railway (ECR) significantly expanded its operations with 20 new trains, 20 extensions, and 12 trains that were speeded up.
The Eastern Railway (ER) followed suit with the introduction of 6 new trains and speeding up of 32 trains. The North Central Railway (NCR) added 2 new services, extended 4 trains, and adjusted the frequency for 2 more. In the North Eastern Railway (NER), 8 new trains were unveiled, alongside 4 extensions, and 12 trains speeding up. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) recorded a massive acceleration with 36 trains speeded up.
The Northern Railway (NR) introduced 20 new trains and improved speed for 24 others, while the North Western Railway (NWR) launched 12 new services and sped up 89 trains—the highest across all zones. On the southern front, the Southern Railway (SR) introduced 6 new trains and speeded up 75 trains, while the South Western Railway (SWR) added 8 new services and improved the speed of 117 trains.
Breakdown of New Introductions and Speed Enhancements
Throughout the TAG 2026 initiative, Indian Railways introduced a total of 122 new trains, encompassing a mix of premier services, express trains, and local passenger services. Notably, 26 of these are categorized as Amrit Bharat trains, with the highest number being 60 Mail/Express trains, along with additional offerings such as Humsafar, Jan Shatabdi, Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services, and Rajdhani trains.
Speed improvements were also a key focus, with 549 trains receiving speed enhancements. These adjustments are designed to bolster punctuality and reduce travel times for passengers. A significant portion of these trains saw improvements ranging from 5 to over 60 minutes, with notable contributions from the South Western Railway and Northern Railway.
