Indian Railways Projects Boost Connectivity and Economic Growth
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has recently approved three significant projects from the Ministry of Railways, amounting to an estimated cost of Rs. 9,072 crore. This initiative aims to enhance India’s railway infrastructure by expanding the network across the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
The approved projects include the doubling of the Gondia – Jabalpur route, as well as the addition of the 3rd and 4th lines for the Punarakh – Kiul and Gamharia – Chandil routes. Collectively, these enhancements will extend the railway network by approximately 307 kilometers, greatly improving accessibility for around 5,407 villages, which are home to roughly 98 lakh residents.

This multi-tracking initiative is set to revolutionize operational efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways. By alleviating congestion and streamlining operations, the projects align with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a New India, promoting self-sufficiency and comprehensive development in the region. The projects are designed under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on bolstering multi-modal connectivity and boosting logistic efficiency through thoughtful planning and collaboration with stakeholders. Enhancing Access to Tourist Attractions
Moreover, the capacity enhancements will improve railway access to several renowned tourist spots, including the Kachnar Shiv Temple in Jabalpur, Kanha National Park in Balaghat, and multiple beautiful waterfalls and parks in the region. This increased railway connectivity will not only make travel more accessible but will likely stimulate local tourism and economies.
Environmentally Responsible Transport
The new routes are crucial for transporting essential commodities such as coal, steel, and food grains, resulting in an expected increase in freight traffic of 52 million tonnes per annum. Besides boosting the economy, rail transport is an environmentally friendly mode that can help the country achieve its climate goals. The initiatives are projected to cut down oil imports by around 6 crore liters and lower carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 30 crore kilograms, equating to the planting of one crore trees.
