Indian Railways Enhances Passenger Safety and Security Through Crime Prevention and Lost Property Recovery
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has made significant strides in enhancing safety and security across Indian Railways from January to October 2025. With a focus on protecting passengers and railway property, the RPF has successfully implemented various initiatives aimed at crime prevention and public welfare. These efforts have resulted in the rescue of thousands of vulnerable individuals, the recovery of lost belongings, and a crackdown on drug trafficking, showcasing the RPF’s commitment to ensuring a safe travel experience for all.
One of the standout initiatives of the RPF is Operation ‘Nanhe Farishtey,’ which focuses on reuniting lost or separated children with their families. Launched to address the plight of vulnerable children, this operation has proven to be highly effective. Between January and October 2025, the RPF successfully rescued a total of 16,450 children, comprising 11,543 boys and 4,906 girls. In October 2025 alone, the operation saw the rescue of 1,586 children, including 1,085 boys and 501 girls. The RPF collaborates with various authorities to ensure these children are safely returned to their families, highlighting the importance of community support in safeguarding the welfare of minors.
Operation ‘Jeevan Raksha’
Another critical initiative is Operation ‘Jeevan Raksha,’ which aims to prevent fatalities on railway tracks. This life-saving mission has been instrumental in rescuing individuals in distress. From January to October 2025, the RPF reported saving 2,658 lives, including 1,757 males and 901 females. In October 2025, the operation successfully rescued 296 individuals, comprising 191 males and 105 females. The RPF’s proactive approach in monitoring railway tracks and responding swiftly to emergencies has significantly contributed to reducing accidents and ensuring passenger safety.
Operation NARCOS
The RPF has also intensified its efforts against drug trafficking through Operation NARCOS. Empowered by the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act since April 2019, the RPF has been actively involved in combating the illegal drug trade. From January to October 2025, the operation led to the detection of 1,794 cases, resulting in the recovery of narcotics valued at ₹197.19 crore and the arrest of 1,450 individuals. In October 2025 alone, 140 cases were detected, with narcotics worth ₹14.68 crore seized and 133 arrests made. This ongoing crackdown underscores the RPF’s commitment to maintaining a drug-free environment within the railway network.
Operation ‘Amanat’
Operation ‘Amanat’ is another significant initiative aimed at returning lost valuables to their rightful owners. This passenger-centric program has successfully reunited travelers with their left-behind belongings. Between January and October 2025, the RPF retrieved 42,210 articles of lost luggage, valued at approximately ₹70.66 crore. In October 2025 alone, 7,894 articles were recovered, worth around ₹8.65 crore. This initiative not only enhances passenger satisfaction but also reinforces the RPF’s dedication to ensuring the safety of personal belongings during travel.
The collective achievements of the RPF and Indian Railways reflect their unwavering commitment to creating a secure and comfortable travel environment. Through innovative initiatives and collaboration with various agencies, they continue to protect vulnerable individuals, save lives, and combat illegal activities, ensuring that every journey is safe and worry-free.
