Indian Railways Embraces Advanced Technology for a Greener Future
Indian Railways is undergoing a significant transformation as it modernizes its infrastructure and rolling stock by integrating cutting-edge technologies. This initiative aims to enhance safety, reliability, timeliness, and passenger comfort, reflecting the railways’ commitment to meet the increasing expectations of its users.
In a bid to reduce environmental impact, Indian Railways is taking major steps to electrify its network. This effort has resulted in a marked decrease in the usage of coal and diesel-powered engines. The electrification project has been approached with a mission-driven mindset, achieving an impressive 99.2% completion rate in the broad gauge network. Electrification Progress
While around 21,801 kilometers of the railway network were electrified before 2014, significant strides have been made since then, with an additional 46,900 kilometers electrified between 2014 and 2025. The ongoing work on the remaining portions of the network is expected to contribute further to reducing carbon emissions throughout the rail system.
Innovating with Technology
Indian Railways is also pioneering the manufacturing of state-of-the-art locomotives based on three-phase IGBT technology. These new engines boast regenerative braking capabilities, allowing them to recapture and reuse energy, ultimately enhancing their energy efficiency. Meanwhile, traditional coal-fired steam engines have found a niche in operating UNESCO-accredited mountain railways, seasonal tourist trains, and special charter services, preserving their heritage value.
Renewable Energy Initiatives
To sustainably meet its electrification power needs, Indian Railways is progressively transitioning to renewable energy sources. By November 2025, approximately 812 Mega Watts (MW) of solar power and about 93 MW of wind energy will be fully operational to support railway traction. Additionally, a partnership has been established with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to secure 100 MW under Round the Clock (RTC) conditions, ensuring continuous energy supply for rail operations.
Furthermore, plans are in motion to integrate an additional 1,500 MW of renewable energy capacity under RTC arrangements. This hybrid solution involves a combination of solar, wind, and energy storage components, enhancing the sustainability of the railway’s power supply.
Future Projects
For the fiscal year 2023-24, Indian Railways allocated an impressive ₹29,614 crore towards traction expenses, reflecting its commitment to modernization. Moreover, a groundbreaking pilot project for hydrogen-powered trains is underway. This project, initiated based on specifications by the Research, Design & Standards Organization (RDSO), signals a significant step towards adopting alternative energy technologies in the railway sector and strives for a cleaner, greener future.
In alignment with its goal to become a Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030, Indian Railways is firmly poised to revolutionize railway travel through renewable energy strategies and innovative technologies.
