Indian Railways Boosts Safety and Efficiency with Digital Upgrades

Indian Railways is making remarkable advancements in its telecom and digital infrastructure for the year 2025-26. With a clear focus on enhancing safety, operational efficiency, and the overall travel experience for passengers, the railways are embracing modern technologies and innovative solutions. These efforts signify a major leap towards a more integrated and efficient travel ecosystem.
Enhancing Telecom Backbone Infrastructure
One of the standout achievements this year is the significant enhancement of the Unified Telecom Backbone Infrastructure using Internet Protocol Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP MPLS) technology. This state-of-the-art network is designed to accommodate the present and future bandwidth needs of critical railway applications. It allows for centralized video surveillance and supports essential railway systems such as Mobile Train Radio Communication (MTRC), the Passenger Reservation System (PRS), the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS), and the Freight Operations Information System (FOIS). Currently, IP MPLS has been successfully established at 1,396 railway stations, marking a crucial step toward a digitally integrated railway network.
AI-Powered Surveillance for Passenger Safety
In terms of security, Indian Railways has upgraded its Video Surveillance System (VSS) across 1,874 railway stations. This advanced system features AI-based Video Analytics that can automatically detect events like intrusion and loitering, along with Facial Recognition Software for real-time monitoring. The Union Railway Minister emphasized the significance of these technological advancements, stating, “the cameras will be the eyes of the system, and AI will be its brain,” underscoring AI’s critical role in enhancing railway safety.
Real-Time Passenger Information Systems
Additionally, there have been major improvements to passenger information systems with the rollout of the Integrated Passenger Information System (IPIS). This system incorporates Electronic Train Indicator Boards, Coach Guidance Systems, and Public Address Systems to ensure that train-related information is communicated promptly. When combined with the National Train Enquiry System (NTES), automatic, real-time announcements can occur at stations. Currently, 1,405 stations have implemented this integration, significantly enhancing passenger communication.
Revolutionizing Tunnel Communication
To further improve connectivity, Tunnel Communication Systems are being deployed across various railway zones, particularly in the strategic Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This system guarantees uninterrupted radio communication between personnel operating inside tunnels and those in headquarters and control centers, greatly enhancing safety and coordination in challenging environments.
Commitment to a Modern Railway Ecosystem
These initiatives during 2025-26 underscore Indian Railways’ commitment to utilizing cutting-edge technology and innovation to create a safer and more efficient railway network. The expansion of telecom infrastructure, the implementation of AI-driven systems, and improvements in passenger information services collectively contribute to a modernized rail ecosystem that is responsive to passenger needs and aligns with the broader vision of Digital India.
