Indian Railways Boosts Connectivity with ₹18,509 Crore Projects
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given the green light to three major railway projects worth approximately ₹18,509 crore. These initiatives promise to enhance railway infrastructure across the nation by adding new lines in strategic locations, aiming to improve mobility and service reliability for Indian Railways.
The approved projects include the third and fourth lines for the Kasara-Manmad route, the Delhi-Ambala route, and the Ballari-Hosapete route. This expansion is set to significantly alleviate congestion, enabling more efficient operations. The developments align with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a New India, which emphasizes self-reliance and comprehensive regional development, thereby creating more employment opportunities for local residents.
Strategic Development for Multi-Modal Connectivity
The projects are part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on enhancing multi-modal connectivity and logistic efficiency through integrated planning and consultations with stakeholders. Once completed, these initiatives will facilitate seamless movement of people and goods, ultimately boosting regional commerce.
Impact on Local Communities and Tourism
Spanning 12 districts in Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, these developments will add approximately 389 kilometers to the Indian Railways network. This multi-tracking project is expected to improve connectivity to around 3,902 villages, home to an estimated population of 9.7 million.
Moreover, the enhanced railway lines will connect travelers to several prominent tourist attractions, including Bhavli Dam, shrine sites like Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, and historical locations such as Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This improvement will not only boost tourism but also enhance accessibility to these cultural and natural treasures.
Boosting Freight Capacity and Environmental Benefits
These projects are crucial for transporting essential commodities like coal, steel, iron ore, cement, and food grains. The capacity enhancement is projected to handle an additional freight volume of 96 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA). This advancement emphasizes the role of Indian Railways as an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient transportation mode, helping to meet climate goals while minimizing logistics costs.
Furthermore, the initiatives are expected to reduce oil imports by 22 crore litres and lower carbon dioxide emissions by 111 crore kilograms, an impact equivalent to planting four crore trees. The significance of these projects extends beyond just transportation; they represent a forward-looking strategy to foster sustainable development in India.
