Indian Railways Achieves Record Safety Improvements

The Indian Railways has made significant strides in enhancing passenger safety over the years, resulting in a remarkable decrease in train accidents. A report presented by Union Minister for Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlights a steep decline in consequential train accidents, showcasing the effectiveness of newly implemented safety measures.

Steep Reduction in Accidents

Data indicates that the number of consequential train accidents plummeted from 135 in the year 2014-15 to just 14 in 2025-26 (as of February 28, 2026), representing a staggering 90% reduction. The comprehensive statistics reveal the following trends:

From 2004-05 to 2013-14, there were a total of 1,711 train accidents resulting in 904 fatalities and 3,155 injuries. However, between 2014-15 and 2023-24, that number decreased to 678 accidents, causing 748 deaths and 2,087 injuries. Recently, in 2024-25, 31 accidents were recorded with 18 deaths and 92 injuries, further exemplifying ongoing improvements. In just the first two months of 2025-26, the railway system recorded only 14 accidents with 16 fatalities and 28 injuries.

Investment in Safety Measures

The Indian Railways has significantly increased its investment in safety-related activities over the years, emphasizing safety as a top priority. The budget allocation for safety activities rose from ₹39,200 crores in 2013-14 to an anticipated ₹1,20,389 crores in 2026-27, reflecting a robust commitment to safeguarding passengers and railway personnel.

In addition to financial investment, various safety improvements have been implemented systematically. By February 2026, electrical/electronic interlocking systems, aimed at reducing human error, were established at 6,665 stations. Moreover, interlocking mechanisms for level crossing gates were provided at 10,153 locations, enhancing crossing safety.

Track circuiting has also been completed at 6,669 stations to ensure verification of track occupancy through electrical measures, bolstering operational safety. A highlight of the recent enhancements includes the indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, known as ‘Kavach.’ This system, recognized for its rigorous safety certification, has expanded significantly, with successful commissioning on 1,452 route kilometers, particularly covering the busy Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors.

Future Outlook

The comprehensive safety initiatives, along with the notable reduction in accidents and casualties, reflect the Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to ensuring a safe travel experience for all passengers. As these advancements continue, the railway network aims to maintain its focus on safety and operational efficiency.
