Indian Navy’s INS Sudarshini Strengthens Ties in Italy
The Indian Navy’s sail training ship, INS Sudarshini, embarked on a significant mission from Livorno, Italy, on September 12, 2026, following a fruitful port call. During its stay, the ship engaged in numerous professional interactions and cross-training visits, underscoring the strong friendship and maritime cooperation between India and Italy.
Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, Chief of the Italian Navy, visited INS Sudarshini and engaged with the crew and trainees. He was briefed on the ship’s journey and training endeavors, highlighting the mutual exchange of knowledge and experience. Furthermore, the Commanding Officer of INS Sudarshini met with Rear Admiral Alberto Tarabotto, Commandant of the Italian Naval Academy, where they exchanged insights from the ongoing expedition. These interactions were complemented by meetings with local dignitaries, including Mr. Luca Salvetti, the Mayor of Livorno, and Mr. Edoardo Lombardi, the Vice Prefect of Livorno.
As part of the training initiatives, Indian sea trainees visited ITS Virginio Fasan and the prestigious Italian Naval Academy, while their Italian counterparts toured INS Sudarshini. These visits were instrumental in fostering professional cooperation and enhancing mutual understanding between the two naval forces. To celebrate this partnership, a deck reception was hosted onboard INS Sudarshini, attended by senior Italian naval officers, local authorities, diplomatic representatives, and distinguished guests.
INS Sudarshini continues her voyage as a part of Lokayan 2026, embodying the spirit of maritime partnership and the vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions). This expedition not only strengthens naval ties but also promotes broader security and growth across maritime regions.
