Indian Navy Welcomes New MH 60R Helicopter Squadron

In a significant development for its aviation capabilities, the Indian Navy inaugurated the INAS 335 ‘The Ospreys’ on December 17, 2025, at INS Hansa in Goa. This marks the second Indian Naval Air Squadron to be equipped with MH 60R helicopters, following the commissioning of the first squadron in Kochi, Kerala, earlier in March 2024. The ceremony was presided over by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, the Chief of the Naval Staff, emphasizing the importance of this milestone.

Ceremony Highlights

The event was attended by notable figures, including Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. The commissioning was symbolically marked by the reading of the Commissioning Warrant by Captain Dhirender Bisht, the Commanding Officer of INAS 335. Mrs. Laila Swaminathan, President of the Naval Wives Welfare Association (NWWA) Western Region, unveiled the Commissioning Plaque, further highlighting the ceremonial importance of the day.

To celebrate this historic occasion, the squadron received a traditional water cannon salute, an honor that signifies achievement and pride within naval traditions. Other distinguished attendees included Vice Admiral Rahul Vilas Gokhale, the Chief of Staff for the Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Ajay D Theophilus, and Admiral Karambir Singh (Retd), the former Chief of the Naval Staff, along with numerous senior naval officers, veterans, and special guests.

Enhanced Naval Warfare Capabilities

The MH 60R helicopters represent a new era in the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities. Designed for all-weather operations and effective day and night missions, these versatile helicopters are equipped to perform various critical tasks, including Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW), Search and Rescue (SAR), and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC). They also offer vital support for Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP), significantly enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Indian Navy on the Western Seaboard.

The addition of INAS 335 solidifies the Indian Navy’s focus on strengthening its maritime defense strategy, ensuring preparedness for a range of potential maritime challenges. The induction of the MH 60R helicopters embodies a crucial step toward advancing India’s pursuing of a robust naval aviation framework.
