Indian Army Chief Visits Australia to Boost Defence Ties

General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of India, is set to visit Australia from February 16 to 19, 2026. This official trip aims to bolster defense cooperation between India and Australia, highlighting the strengthening ties between the two nations.

During his visit, General Dwivedi will engage in various discussions with senior officials from the Australian Defence Forces. The focus will be on enhancing joint military engagements, including training exercises, professional exchanges, and capacity building initiatives between the two armies.

Key Interactions in Sydney

While in Sydney, General Dwivedi will meet with top leadership from Forces Command (FORCOMD), Special Operations Command (SOCOMD), and the 2nd Division. Notably, the 2nd Division’s troops participate in the bilateral Army Exercise AUSTRAHIND, with the next iteration set to occur in India in 2026. This engagement marks an important phase in the growing military partnership.

Meetings and Ceremonial Events

Upon his arrival in Canberra, General Dwivedi will receive a formal ceremonial welcome and a Guard of Honour. He will then interact with Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, the Chief of the Australian Army, who shares a strong professional bond with General Dwivedi, both being alumni of the US Army War College Class of 2015. Their discussions will cover defense cooperation, modernization efforts, and futuristic operational strategies at the Australian Defence Forces Headquarters.

Furthermore, General Dwivedi is scheduled to meet with the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and the Secretary of the Department of Defence. A visit to the Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC) is also on the agenda, where he will connect with the Commander of Joint Operations and receive insights into the operational dynamics of the Australian Defence Forces.

Paying Tribute and Connecting with Veterans

In a gesture of respect, the COAS will lay a wreath at the Australian War Memorial, honoring the sacrifices made by fallen soldiers. He plans to meet with Indian Defence Veterans living in Australia, further emphasizing the strong ties between the Indian Armed Forces and its veterans.

This visit underlines the mutual commitment of India and Australia to enhance defense cooperation, contributing positively to peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
