Indian Army and Air Force Deliver 100 Eye Surgeries at Gorakhpur Camp
A specialized team of ophthalmic doctors from the Indian Army and Indian Air Force successfully performed over 100 surgeries on the first day of the Mega Advanced Surgical Eye Camp held at the 12 Air Force Hospital in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, on February 24, 2026. The surgeries included advanced cataract procedures, minimally invasive glaucoma operations, and complex retinal treatments. The camp was led by Brigadier (Dr) Sanjay Kumar Mishra, the Consultant and Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Army Hospital (Research & Referral). An array of state-of-the-art medical equipment was airlifted to the site via Indian Air Force aircraft, ensuring the highest standards of care.
Comprehensive Screenings Underway
Currently, comprehensive screenings are being conducted for ex-servicemen, their dependents, and underprivileged civilians. The turnout has been impressive, with anticipation for sustained participation over the next few days. The inaugural ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Director General Armed Forces Medical Services Surg Vice Adm Arti Sarin and Director General Medical Services (Air) Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja. More than 300 surgeries are expected to take place throughout the duration of the camp, which concludes on February 27, 2026.
A Commitment to Community Health
This initiative underscores the military’s dual role as both a strong defender of the nation and a compassionate provider of healthcare. The elite team has previously organized six successful camps across various locations, from the Himalayan foothills to the remote villages in Jammu and Kutch. These camps reflect the government’s dedication to delivering quality healthcare services to underserved areas.
The Mega Advanced Surgical Eye Camp stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Indian armed forces in enhancing the well-being of the community. By addressing pressing healthcare needs, the military continues to contribute to the social fabric, ensuring that even the most remote populations receive essential medical attention.
