India-US Trade Deal Safeguards Farmers, Minister Affirms

In response to opposition concerns about the India-US Trade Deal, Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has assured that the agreement prioritizes and protects India’s agricultural interests. Speaking in Delhi, Chouhan stated that the deal, crafted under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, marks a new standard in diplomacy and development, emphasizing that farmers’ welfare is non-negotiable.

The Minister confirmed that India’s essential grains, fruits, major crops, millets, and dairy products are completely secure under this agreement. He highlighted that both small and large farmers’ interests are fully safeguarded, assuring that the deal is designed to create new opportunities instead of posing risks to the agricultural sector.

Clarification Regarding Small Farmers and US Agricultural Products

Addressing concerns about the impact on small farmers, who comprise a significant part of India’s agricultural population, Chouhan emphasized that there will be no abrupt influx of foreign products into the Indian market that might jeopardize local farmers. He reassured that all significant market segments remain protected and that no harmful opening of markets has occurred. Furthermore, he mentioned that recent speculations sparked by a tweet from the US Treasury Secretary regarding expanded access for American farm products were clarified by Commerce Minister Shri Piyush Goyal in Parliament, reaffirming that domestic farmers are not under pressure.

Enhancing Exports of Rice, Spices, and Textiles

Highlighting the potential for increased exports resulting from the trade deal, Chouhan pointed out that India already exports rice to numerous nations, including the United States, with recent exports amounting to approximately ₹63,000 crore. He indicated that reduced tariffs would directly benefit Indian rice, spices, and textile export sectors, promising growth that would be advantageous for millions of farmers growing cotton. Chouhan firmly stated that this agreement is undoubtedly in the best interest of Indian farmers and opens up new export opportunities despite opposition misinformation.

Commitment to Farmers’ Welfare

In response to opposition calls for transparency regarding the trade deal’s details, the Minister reiterated that comprehensive information would be provided in due time. He underscored the unchanging principle of ensuring that the interests of Indian farmers are thoroughly protected.

Chouhan expressed the importance of clear communication to alleviate any uncertainty among farmers, stressed the magnitude of the agricultural sector, and passionately referred to farmers as “Annadata,” the providers of life. He concluded with a heartfelt reminder that the welfare of farmers is akin to worship, assuring that the Modi government will steadfastly support them at every stage.
