India Urged to Maximize Opportunities from Free Trade Agreements
India’s Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, has called upon exporters and industry groups to capitalize on the recent Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) established with developed nations. These agreements are seen as pivotal in enhancing job creation and boosting exports across various sectors.
During a meeting with 35 Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) and major industry associations, Goyal received positive feedback from key industry leaders. They expressed gratitude for the government’s proactive trade promotion strategies, lauding the recent advancements in international trade.
Goyal emphasized that the Modi administration’s trade agreements are designed to empower Indian farmers, workers, professionals, artisans, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by providing them with preferential access to global markets. He highlighted the potential global reach for India’s traditional medicines and yoga while reassuring that the agriculture and dairy sectors’ interests are safeguarded.
“The industry must enhance its efforts to explore new markets, improve quality, and boost competitiveness to fully benefit from these trade agreements,” said Goyal, reminding attendees of India’s deep-rooted legacy in international trade. He noted that these deals will further India’s vision for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) and support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s philosophy of balanced development encapsulated in ‘Vikas bhi, Virasat bhi.’
Industry representatives expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the Prime Minister and Goyal’s leadership, particularly regarding the successful trade agreements with the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the United States. Notably, the reversal of a 25% tariff on Indian imports to the U.S., as outlined in a recent Executive Order, is anticipated to restore competitive market access for Indian exports.
As the U.S. is one of India’s most significant export markets, industry representatives pointed out that this tariff relief brings much-needed stability, fostering competitiveness for their products. Sectors previously impacted by the tariff, such as gems and jewelry, textiles, and leather, noted that the rollback has rejuvenated business confidence and protected employment in these labor-intensive industries.
The meeting included contributions from various leading organizations, including the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), Textile Export Promotion Councils, and several agricultural bodies, all of which underscored the positive ramifications of the tariff rollback.
The Ministry also presented insights on recent trade engagements with the U.S., focusing on market access opportunities, compliance requirements, and pathways for expanding exports. Participants appreciated the clarity as they expressed their commitment to enhancing exports within prioritized sectors.
Discussions also touched on the Government’s Export Promotion Mission (EPM), aimed at facilitating exporters. Measures already implemented under this mission, such as trade financing support and collateral guarantees for MSMEs, were welcomed by industry stakeholders. Additional plans related to trade finance, export logistics, and branding are set to be launched incrementally to further fortify India’s export landscape.
