India Unveils Ambitious Khelo India Scheme for Youth Sports

The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has recently unveiled an enhanced Khelo India Scheme, backed by a remarkable budget of Rs. 36,441 crore for the period from 2026 to 2031. This initiative marks a historic commitment from the Government towards harnessing the potential of sports to foster youth development and contribute to nation-building. With aspirations for a new era in sports, the expanded scheme aims to transform the sporting landscape over the next decade.

Expanding Opportunities for Young Athletes

The revamped Khelo India Scheme is the most ambitious sports development program the country has seen since Independence. The approved financial outlay is nearly eight times that of the prior Khelo India initiative, illustrating the Government’s dedication to making sports a foundational aspect of youth engagement and development. The scheme is set to create a streamlined pathway for talented young athletes, spanning from local school sports to the Olympic stage, ensuring that merit is recognized irrespective of geographical or economic barriers.

A Comprehensive Athlete Development Framework

For the first time, a comprehensive framework supporting athlete development will be established, guiding young sportspersons through each phase—from talent identification to Olympic readiness. The program will create a robust sports ecosystem composed of National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), Khelo India Centres of Excellence (KICoEs), and various training hubs across the nation. These facilities will offer world-class coaching and sports science support, significantly enhancing infrastructure countrywide.

Strengthening the School Sports Ecosystem

Recognizing the foundational role of education in sports, the Government has introduced innovative initiatives like Khelo India Feeder Schools (KIFS) and Khelo India Utkrishta Vidyalayas (KIUV). These programs are aimed at integrating sports into mainstream education, allowing for early identification and systematic nurturing of talent. The goal is to ensure that future champions receive the guidance they need from a young age.

Broadening the Athlete Pool

The scheme aims to significantly boost India’s athlete base by creating the Emerging Khelo India Athletes (E-KIAs) category. This expansion will enable professional coaching and support for thousands more young athletes. An extensive talent identification system will be established, ensuring that promising athletes receive continuous tracking and development opportunities. This includes a clear progression route to higher levels of competition, including the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

Enhancing Competitive Opportunities

Regular competition is crucial for sports excellence, and the revamped Khelo India Scheme will strengthen India’s competitive framework. It will bolster opportunities for school, university, and regional competitions, along with national championships. Specific efforts will be directed at supporting women athletes, para-athletes, and promoting indigenous sports, as well as fostering community development through sports.

Promoting a Healthier India

The initiative will also expand the Fit India Movement, focusing on fostering active lifestyles, particularly among youth. Campaigns will support women’s participation in sports and promote fitness initiatives in remote areas. These efforts are aimed at using sports as a powerful tool for social change and public health.

Investing in Coaching and Technology

The Government plans to establish the National Coach Accreditation Board (NCAB), which will enhance coaching standards and professionalize the training of coaches across the country. A unified digital sports platform will be developed to integrate various aspects of athleticism, providing crucial resources for athletes and coaches alike.

Stronger Partnerships for Sporting Success

To optimize the sporting ecosystem, the Government will promote collaboration with private academies, corporate partners, and educational institutions. This concerted effort aims to innovate and enhance investment in sports infrastructure and athlete training.

Supporting India’s Global Sporting Aspirations

The revamped Khelo India Scheme is closely aligned with the Government’s assistance to National Sports Federations (ANSF) program for 2026-2031, meant to bolster support for athletes through funding and resources necessary for coaching and international exposure. This will also promote India’s indigenous sports on a global platform.

A Vision for a Fit India by 2047

Overall, the new Khelo India Scheme is one of the largest sporting investments in India’s history. More than just a sports program, it stands as a national mission to empower youth, promoting confidence, opportunity, and excellence while striving to establish India among the leading sporting nations as part of the vision for a developed Bharat by 2047.
