India to Host 28th CSPOC Conference in 2026

On January 10, 2025, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla announced that the upcoming 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Parliaments of Commonwealth Countries (CSPOC) will focus on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and social media into parliamentary operations. This announcement was made during the Standing Committee Meeting of the CSPOC held in Guernsey. The conference, set to take place in India in 2026, aims to enhance the effectiveness and transparency of parliamentary systems worldwide.

Emphasizing India’s Economic Growth

During his address, Shri Birla highlighted the remarkable transformation India has undergone under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He noted that India has emerged as the fifth-largest economy globally and boasts the third-largest startup ecosystem. This growth is evident across various sectors, including agriculture, fintech, AI, and research and innovation.

Shri Birla invited dignitaries from Commonwealth nations to experience India’s unique blend of heritage and modernity during the CSPOC. He emphasized that India’s world-class infrastructure and service sector are testaments to the country’s rapid development. The invitation reflects India’s commitment to showcasing its advancements while fostering international collaboration.

The Role of Parliaments in Global Challenges

Shri Birla underscored the vital role of parliaments as guardians of democracy and facilitators of public welfare. He stressed the need for parliamentary institutions to become more effective, inclusive, and transparent. This transformation is crucial for addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, terrorism, and cybercrime.

The session brought together parliamentary leaders to discuss these issues and lay the groundwork for the upcoming CSPOC. Shri Birla emphasized that parliaments must work collaboratively to foster good governance and promote sustainable development. By addressing these challenges, parliaments can better serve their constituents and contribute to global stability.

Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation

In his remarks, Shri Birla recognized the CSPOC as a valuable platform for member countries to share best practices and strengthen parliamentary cooperation. He expressed pride in India’s selection as the host for the 28th CSPOC, viewing it as an opportunity to highlight the country’s rich cultural heritage and traditions of inclusivity.

He invoked the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which translates to “the whole world is one family.” This principle serves as a guiding light for fostering global cooperation and unity among nations. Shri Birla reiterated the importance of collaboration in addressing issues like poverty, inequality, and malnutrition while promoting sustainable development.

Looking Ahead to the 28th CSPOC

As the meeting concluded, Shri Birla expressed confidence that the upcoming CSPOC would facilitate meaningful dialogue and collaborative efforts to tackle critical global issues. He reflected on India’s history of hosting significant events, including previous CSPOC conferences in 1970-71, 1986, and 2010.

The discussions during the meeting included finalizing the agenda for the 2026 conference and addressing systemic issues affecting parliaments worldwide. Shri Birla extended a warm invitation to all Commonwealth presiding officers to attend the conference in New Delhi. He concluded by thanking His Excellency Sir Richard McMahon, the presiding officer of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, for his leadership and hospitality. The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of Commonwealth parliaments to uphold democracy and good governance in the face of contemporary challenges.
