India to Hold Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council Elections Soon
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made a significant announcement regarding the upcoming elections, targeting a total of 27 seats across two significant legislative bodies. This includes biennial elections for the Council of States, commonly known as Rajya Sabha, and bye-elections for several seats in the State Legislative Councils across three states.
Election Details Unveiled
The elections will involve 24 seats distributed among 10 states for the Rajya Sabha, alongside three bye-elections—one each in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha. Additionally, the State Legislative Councils by Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) in Bihar and Karnataka will see a total of 16 seats contested: nine in Bihar and seven in Karnataka, plus an additional bye-election in Bihar.
Timeline for Nominations and Voting
The ECI has officially issued notifications detailing the election program and has appointed Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers for the elections, with the relevant details published in the Gazette of India and State Gazettes. Nomination filing commenced today at 11:00 AM on June 1, 2026, and candidates have until June 8, 2026, at 3:00 PM to submit their papers.
Once the nominations have been filed, there will be a scrutiny held by the respective Returning Officers on June 9, 2026. Candidates who wish to withdraw their nominations have until June 11, 2026, to do so. In the event that elections are contested, the polling day is set for June 18, 2026, with voting scheduled from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The counting of votes will occur at 5:00 PM the same day.
