India to Boost Allied Health Workforce by 100,000 Professionals

In an effort to enhance the healthcare system, a recent breakout session of the Post-Budget Webinar Series focused on expanding the number of Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) in India. Stemming from the theme “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas – Fulfilling Aspirations of People,” the session convened a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, academics, and industry leaders, to discuss strategies aimed at improving allied healthcare education and workforce capabilities.

The Indian government has set an ambitious target to increase the number of AHPs by 100,000 over the next five years. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of enhancing accessibility, quality, and sustainability within the allied healthcare services sector throughout the country.

Growing Demand for Allied Health Professionals

Moderated by Dr. Vinod Kotwal, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the session emphasized the rising need for allied health professionals driven by demographic changes, an uptick in non-communicable diseases, the expansion of healthcare facilities, and the swift adoption of advanced technologies. Notable sectors such as diagnostics, physiotherapy, imaging, and emergency care are experiencing heightened demand for skilled professionals.

Expanding Education and Training Opportunities

Dr. Kotwal outlined key areas for increasing training capacity, which include Optometry, Physiotherapy, Medical Laboratory Sciences, and more. Currently, India boasts over 500 government institutions offering approximately 48,000 seats, while about 3,800 private institutions provide over 360,000 seats. However, there are disparities in infrastructure and training quality that need to be addressed to ensure uniform standards, as mandated by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021.

A Comprehensive Approach to Workforce Development

This initiative aims to upgrade educational offerings across diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs, modernizing AHP institutions and strengthening laboratories and simulation facilities. In addition, addressing faculty shortages and raising awareness about career opportunities in allied health is a central focus. Several distinguished experts, including Dr. Yagna Unmesh Shukla and Dr. Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth, highlighted the critical role these professionals play in the healthcare delivery system.

Leveraging Collaborative Efforts

The panelists stressed the importance of collaboration between academia and industry, advocating for the establishment of faculty exchange programs to alleviate faculty shortages and enhance educational quality. They proposed utilizing district medical colleges as hubs for allied health sciences, which would significantly boost training capacity and expand the pool of skilled professionals nationwide.

Forward-Thinking Strategies for Healthcare Development

The operationalization of the NCAHP represents a transformative shift in the regulatory framework for allied health education. The recent discussions paved the way for developing a comprehensive roadmap aimed at meeting current and future healthcare demands, while also positioning allied health professions as attractive career paths for the youth.

This collaborative session, attended by senior officials and representatives from key healthcare sectors, serves as a pivotal move toward translating the Union Budget’s policy aspirations into actionable strategies that will strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.
