India Takes Leadership at 9th Indian Ocean Naval Symposium

The 9th Conclave of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) took place in Visakhapatnam on February 20, 2026, bringing together naval leaders and maritime security officials from 33 nations. This significant gathering highlighted the increasing cooperation among countries stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific, all of which are committed to enhancing security and collaboration in the Indian Ocean region.
In a notable development for the forum, India has resumed the Chairmanship of IONS, taking the reins from the Royal Thai Navy after a gap of 16 years. India previously held the inaugural Chairmanship from 2008 to 2010. The Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, now chairs the symposium and has laid out an ambitious vision aimed at reinforcing IONS’s relevance. Key areas of focus will include bolstering Working Groups dedicated to Maritime Security, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), and Information Sharing and Interoperability.
Key Initiatives and Developments
During the Conclave, several important milestones were achieved. The Indian Navy introduced an upgraded IONS website designed to improve usability and ensure ongoing institutional engagement among member navies. Additionally, the Philippines was welcomed as a new Observer, while Oman joined the IONS Working Group focused on HADR, thereby expanding the collaborative framework of the symposium.
Looking ahead, India has outlined several initiatives to drive engagement during its Chairmanship. These include the upcoming IONS Maritime Exercise (IMEX), consistent deployments of the Indian Ocean Series Anti-Piracy Group (IOS SAGAR) involving personnel from various IONS navies and maritime security agencies, and organized Maritime Information Sharing Workshops aimed at enhancing operational dialogue and professional collaboration.
A Renewed Commitment to Maritime Stability
The 9th Conclave signifies a pivotal moment in the evolution of IONS, with India’s leadership promising renewed momentum and a deeper commitment among member nations to uphold maritime stability in the Indian Ocean region. As the symposium grows, it reflects a collective effort to address maritime security challenges while fostering partnerships for a safer and more cooperative maritime environment.
