India Strengthens Kidney Care with Innovative Diagnostic Solution

In a significant move towards enhancing healthcare accessibility and affordability, the Technology Development Board (TDB) of the Indian Government has partnered with Prantae Solutions Private Limited, based in Odisha. This collaboration aims to financially support the project titled “Manufacturing and Commercialization of Renal Care Innovative Diagnostic Product: Proflo-U for Point-of-Care Kidney Health Assessment”. The project is designed to facilitate early detection and monitoring of kidney diseases and complications related to pregnancy at the primary healthcare level.
Addressing a Growing Public Health Concern
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is rapidly becoming a major public health issue in India, with an alarming estimate of over 200,000 new patients entering the end-stage renal disease category each year. Early detection is crucial, particularly for high-risk groups such as individuals suffering from diabetes, hypertension, and older adults. The identification of biomarkers like urine albumin and creatinine levels is especially essential for diagnosing pregnancy-related complications, including preeclampsia. These biomarkers feature in the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) essential diagnostics list for antenatal care. Unfortunately, dependable and quantitative testing solutions at primary healthcare facilities remain insufficient, as conventional methods often lack the sensitivity required for early diagnosis.
Introduction of Proflo-U
To close this gap, Prantae Solutions has developed Proflo-U, an innovative point-of-care diagnostic solution that integrates advanced technologies. Proflo-U includes:
- Urine Albumin Measurement Kit – A state-of-the-art in vitro diagnostic device based on nano-sensor technology, supported by multiple Indian patents. It has a wide detection range (20–1200 mg/L) and is stable at room temperature.
- Urine Creatinine Measurement Kit – This device also boasts a broad detection range (150–4000 mg/L) and is designed to function reliably at ambient temperatures.
- Portable Urine Analyzer – An indigenous device that employs both absorbance and fluorescence technologies, making it lightweight and rechargeable. This analyzer is Bluetooth and IoT enabled, and pairs with the Proflo-U mobile application, offering AI/ML capabilities and calibration-free functionality.
The project includes plans to establish a manufacturing facility in Odisha, which will enhance production capacity for Proflo-U, making it available across primary health centers, diagnostic networks, and antenatal care settings. This product has been thoroughly validated against gold-standard clinical methods and aims to combine the precision of laboratory testing with the convenience of point-of-care diagnostics.
Support and Future Implications
Sh. Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, commented that the partnership with Prantae Solutions is indicative of TDB’s commitment to fostering indigenous diagnostic capabilities. He highlighted that innovations like Proflo-U can significantly alleviate the disease burden through timely detection and intervention, ultimately leading to improved public health outcomes and reduced healthcare costs.
The founders of Prantae Solutions expressed their appreciation for the support from TDB, emphasizing that this funding will expedite the manufacturing and national deployment of their innovative product. They noted that the TDB’s assistance underscores the validity of their research in translational biotechnology and reinforces their commitment to providing affordable, reliable healthcare solutions that align with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
