India Strengthens Heritage Conservation with New Cultural Mapping Initiative
In a bid to safeguard and enhance India’s rich cultural heritage, the National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM) has launched a Capacity-Building Programme at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in New Delhi. This initiative aligns with a nationwide series of All-India Gram Sabhas set for January 26, 2026, and aims to foster deeper documentation of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
Building a Stronger Cultural Framework
The NMCM’s flagship scheme, “Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar (MGMD),” serves as a vital tool for documenting India’s diverse cultural landscape while also creating avenues for revitalizing rural economies through heritage engagement. The first session of the programme welcomed prominent figures including Shri Vivek Agarwal, the Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, as the Chief Guest, and Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, as the Guest of Honour. Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary of IGNCA, delivered the welcome address, setting the stage for an engaging dialogue.
Digital Presence for Villages
In his keynote address, Shri Vivek Agarwal emphasized the program’s importance for enhancing the digital footprint of rural India. He outlined a five-point strategy for upgrading the MGMD portal, which includes gaining a comprehensive understanding of its capabilities, identifying its categories, and adopting corrective measures. Agarwal referred to this collaborative effort as “heritage in PRA” and encouraged attendees to work beyond departmental confines. His speech culminated in an interactive Q&A session, allowing for further insights.
The Role of Grassroots Institutions
Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh discussed the essential role of Panchayati Raj Institutions in the process of cultural mapping, leveraging their grassroots experience for effective outreach. He stressed the necessity for timely execution and consistent oversight to achieve meaningful cultural documentation.
Preserving Village Identity
Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi highlighted the critical need to maintain the original essence of villages amid urbanization. He referenced the Prime Minister’s vision for a Viksit Bharat, underlining that documenting cultural heritage on the MGMD portal is crucial. Joshi noted that the ambition to decolonize Indian society by 2035 could be realized by restoring village identities and heritage.

The programme’s concluding session featured Shri Vivek Bhardwaj, Secretary of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, who shared nostalgic memories of village life and acknowledged the fading of intangible cultural traditions.
