India Strengthens Defense with Major Arms Contracts Worth ₹4,666 Crore
On December 30, 2025, India’s Ministry of Defence signed significant agreements totaling ₹4,666 crore aimed at enhancing the country’s military capabilities. These contracts include the procurement of more than 4.25 lakh Close Quarter Battle (CQB) Carbines and 48 Heavy Weight Torpedoes, with the signing taking place at South Block in New Delhi. Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh was present for the occasion, marking a pivotal step towards strengthening India’s defense sector.
CQB Carbine: A Leap in Infantry Technology
The contract for the CQB Carbines, valued at ₹2,770 crore, was awarded to Bharat Forge Ltd and PLR Systems Pvt Ltd. This deal not only aims to upgrade the arsenals of the Indian Army and the Indian Navy but also signifies the fruition of persistent efforts to supply Indian soldiers with advanced weaponry. The initiative is aligned with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, which focuses on self-reliance in defense production.
The CQB Carbine is designed to offer a tactical advantage in close combat situations, featuring a compact build and a high rate of fire. This modern weapon will replace older systems, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing military efficiency. Furthermore, this collaboration between government and private firms signifies a boost for the _Make-in-India_ program, fostering economic growth and generating employment opportunities. By supporting local manufacturers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the project aims to fortify Indigenous defense production.
Heavy Weight Torpedoes: Boosting Naval Strength
Another significant agreement involves the acquisition of 48 Heavy Weight Torpedoes, with an investment of approximately ₹1,896 crore. This contract, signed with WASS Submarine Systems S.R.L. from Italy, focuses on supplying these advanced torpedoes for the Kalvari Class submarines of the Indian Navy. With deliveries set to begin in April 2028 and conclude in early 2030, this acquisition is expected to significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy’s submarine fleet.
The Heavy Weight Torpedoes are equipped with advanced technology, reinforcing the Indian Navy’s operational capacity. This procurement underlines the government’s resolve to equip the navy with cutting-edge weapons and technologies, ensuring it meets contemporary challenges effectively.
Throughout the Financial Year 2025-26, the Ministry of Defence has prioritized modernization efforts, signing capital contracts totaling ₹1,82,492 crore aimed at strengthening the Armed Forces.
