India Signs FTA with EU and Seven Additional Trade Agreements Since 2021

The recently announced Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union (EU) marks a significant milestone in India’s trade landscape, becoming the country’s eighth such pact since 2021. Dubbed the “mother of all deals” by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, this agreement was finalized during the visit of European leaders to India for the 77th Republic Day celebrations. With this pact, the EU joins the ranks of India’s FTA partners, enhancing trade opportunities between the second-largest economy in the world and the fourth-largest.

Details of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement

The India-EU FTA is poised to provide Indian exports worth approximately ₹6.4 lakh crore access to 27 EU markets under a unified trade framework. This agreement is expected to significantly boost market access for Indian products across various sectors, including textiles, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and agricultural products. Union Minister Piyush Goyal expressed optimism about implementing the FTA, aiming for a rollout within the current calendar year, although it is anticipated to be fully operational by next year. The deal is seen as a strategic move to strengthen economic ties between India and Europe, fostering greater collaboration in trade and investment.

India’s Recent Free Trade Agreements

Since 2021, India has successfully negotiated eight FTAs, reflecting its proactive approach to enhancing international trade relations. The first of these was the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) with Mauritius, signed on February 22, 2021, and effective from April 1. Following this, India entered into a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with the UAE on February 18, 2022, which came into effect on May 1, allowing for significant tariff reductions on both sides.

In April 2022, India signed the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) with Australia, which has been in effect since December 29, 2022. This agreement allows for tariff-free access for a substantial portion of Australian goods exported to India. Additionally, the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) was signed in March 2024, committing to substantial investments and job creation in India over the next 15 years.

Impact on Various Sectors

The FTA with the EU is expected to have a profound impact on multiple sectors of the Indian economy. Key industries such as textiles and apparel, engineering goods, and pharmaceuticals are likely to benefit from enhanced market access. The agreement will also facilitate the export of medical devices, electronics, chemicals, plastics, and rubber products. Furthermore, sectors like marine products, leather and footwear, gems and jewelry, handicrafts, tea, spices, and agricultural products are set to gain from this trade pact.

The anticipated increase in exports to the EU markets is expected to create new opportunities for Indian businesses, potentially leading to job creation and economic growth. The government’s focus on expanding trade relations with major economies like the EU aligns with its broader strategy to enhance India’s global economic footprint.

Future Prospects and Strategic Importance

The India-EU FTA is not just another trade agreement; it represents a strategic partnership that could reshape economic relations between India and Europe. As the global economy continues to evolve, India’s proactive approach to securing FTAs positions it favorably in the international market. The agreement is expected to enhance India’s competitiveness and attract foreign investment, further integrating the country into global supply chains.

With the successful negotiation of this FTA, India is likely to continue its trend of forming strategic trade partnerships, reinforcing its status as a key player in the global economy. The government’s commitment to fostering trade relations with various nations reflects its vision of sustainable economic growth and development in the coming years.
