India Shines as Global Content Hub at Waves Bazaar
The Waves Bazaar, a significant event held during Bharat Parv at the Ritz, brought together prominent figures from the worlds of cinema, technology, and policy-making. Organized by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) under its WAVES (World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit) initiative, this gathering emphasized India’s growing role as a “Global Content Factory.” It showcased the nation’s expanding impact on cinema, media, and innovative creative technologies.
India’s Emerging Role in Global Storytelling
The event kicked off with remarks from Shri Gautam Bhanot, General Manager of NFDC, who laid out the future path for India’s Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comic (AVGC) sectors and film industry. The highlight of the day was a high-level panel discussion titled “India as a Global Content Factory: Scale, Talent, and New Business Models,” moderated by Vidushi Kain, NFDC’s General Manager of Media & Communication. The panel featured industry leaders such as Marten Rabarts (IFFR Pro), Katharina Suckale (Bombay Berlin Film Productions), and Tommaso Priante (Luminalia). They discussed platforms like Film Bazaar and WAVES Bazaar, along with government initiatives like WAVEX and CIC challenges, which are enhancing India’s production capabilities and fostering cross-border collaborations.
Regional Governments Embrace Film Tourism
In a notable push for film tourism, both Delhi and Maharashtra presented their strategies. Shri Kapil Mishra, the Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Art & Culture for Delhi, detailed the capital’s updated policies aimed at attracting filmmakers. Following this, Shri Ashish Shelar, the Hon’ble Minister of Culture for Maharashtra, outlined the state’s extensive production support and financial incentives designed to attract both local and international projects. Both ministers were honored for their contributions to the cultural economy.
Kurinji Project: A Model of International Co-Production
As part of Bharat Parv on February 13, the Waves Bazaar Global Outreach Delegation showcased the feature film _Kurinji_ during a panel focused on its India–France–Germany co-production model. The session included writer-director Payal Sethi and her international co-producers. _Kurinji_, which won the Berlinale Talents fellowship and First Prize at the NFDC Waves Film Bazaar Co-Production Market, is a character-driven drama set in Kerala that delves into themes of migration, identity, and resilience. Produced by FilmKaravan, known for the acclaimed series _Delhi Crime_, this project highlights the importance of cross-border collaboration in global storytelling.
Showcasing Future Talent and Innovation
A dedicated segment titled “Filmmakers & Tech Startups Open Pitch” featured nine film projects spanning a variety of genres and backgrounds. Presentations included _Kabootar_, a Hindi-Japanese mystery drama seeking partners for co-production; _Yeh Mera Ghar (My Home)_, a completed art-house drama; and _THE G.O.A.T._, a Tamil-English animated children’s feature. Other notable projects highlighted included the award-winning _Echoes of the Herd_, a 1980s UK-set coming-of-age musical named _White Guy_, and several more unique titles.
The Wave X showcase brought attention to innovative projects like Crewbella’s decentralized festival monetisation platform, AI-driven gaming from Tuttifrutti Games, and Zangoh’s generative AI localisation tools. Additionally, winners of the Create in India Challenge (CIC), featuring projects like the historical animated feature _Road To Jinji_ and the fantasy adventure _The Dream Balloon_, were also well-received.
