India Seeks German Partnerships in Defence Technology
In a significant move to strengthen defence ties, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has called upon German industries to collaborate on co-developing and co-producing niche technologies. Speaking at the Defence Investor Summit in Munich on April 23, 2026, Singh emphasized the importance of reliable partnerships amidst evolving geopolitical landscapes, supply chain disruptions, and technological transformations.
Addressing leaders from both the Indian and German defence sectors, Singh highlighted that nations are reassessing their dependencies and diversifying their supply chains. In this context, he presented India as an attractive partner, citing its growing market, skilled workforce, and dynamic industrial ecosystem. “These factors are pivotal for long-term investment decisions in today’s uncertain environment,” he remarked.
Opportunities for Collaboration
Singh pointed to the significant untapped potential available under India’s ReArm Europe and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. He expressed interest in joint ventures, particularly in advanced radar systems, AI-enabled drone technology, and underwater transmission systems. With a focus on India’s goal of evolving into a developed nation by 2047, he remarked that this transition is supported by the aspirations of 1.4 billion people and robust macroeconomic stability.
A New Era of Self-Reliance
Rajnath Singh framed India’s self-reliance strategy not as isolation but as a foundation for international collaboration. “Self-reliance is about partnering with trusted allies to design, develop, and produce defence equipment in India,” he said, emphasizing the opportunities this approach presents for the global industry. He asserted that partnerships built on mutual respect can foster shared growth and long-term value.

During his address, Singh underscored the significant role of the defence sector in India’s ambition to become a developed nation. He stated that a robust defence industrial ecosystem encourages collaboration across various domains, including universities and research institutions, ultimately driving economic resilience and competitiveness. “A strong defence industry not only enhances national security but also fuels economic growth,” he added.
Structural Reforms to Encourage Investment
Highlighting the government’s efforts over the last decade, Singh noted that numerous reforms have been implemented to facilitate business operations in India, making the country an appealing destination for foreign investment. He mentioned ongoing efforts to liberalize norms and strengthen regulatory frameworks, alongside major investments in infrastructure to support potential partnerships.
Future of India-Germany Relations
Singh expressed optimism about deepening India-Germany defence relations, characterized by industrial partnerships focused on co-development. He stated, “Both countries are aligning their industries to reinforce supply chains in response to shifting geopolitical dynamics.”
The Defence Minister’s visit to Germany included a trip to the TKMS Submarine building facility in Kiel, enhancing discussions on advanced naval capabilities. Bilateral talks with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius led to the signing of a Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap and other agreements aimed at strengthening the strategic defence collaboration.
Looking ahead, Singh envisions a partnership rooted in innovation and strategic cooperation. As India aims for a comprehensive defence industrial base, collaboration with Germany appears critical in achieving mutual goals for stability and growth.
