India Reduces Groundwater Contamination with New Initiatives

The Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) is taking significant strides in monitoring groundwater quality across India as part of its comprehensive program. During 2024, the board launched a targeted monitoring initiative focused on groundwater quality hotspots to analyze contaminant spread and delineate areas of localized contamination. This effort aims to better understand how contaminants migrate and affect surrounding regions.

CGWB has outlined various remedial strategies to address groundwater contamination stemming from multiple sources, sharing these findings through Annual Ground Water Quality Reports and advisories aimed at state and district administrations. These reports include findings from the National Aquifer Mapping and Management (NAQUIM) studies and discussions during training and public engagement sessions. Furthermore, the CGWB has developed methodologies for constructing wells that are safe from Arsenic and Fluoride contamination, sharing these techniques with state governments for wider implementation.

Jal Jeevan Mission: A Milestone in Water Safety

Since its launch in 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission has been a cornerstone of the Government of India’s strategy to ensure every rural household has access to safe drinking water. The scheme encompasses the entire country, but it prioritizes areas severely impacted by water quality issues. States and Union Territories are encouraged to create and implement piped water supply projects that utilize safe sources, such as surface water or alternative safe groundwater, particularly for villages affected by poor water quality.

Thanks to the diligent efforts of the government and other stakeholders, there has been a remarkable reduction in the number of households facing contamination from key pollutants such as Arsenic and Fluoride. Reports indicate that from August 2019 to January 2026, the number of habitations impacted by Arsenic plummeted from 14,020 to just 314, while cases of Fluoride contamination dropped from 7,996 to 245. For those remaining, clean and safe drinking water has been provided through Community Water Purifier Plants (CWPPs).

Nitrate Contamination: Challenges and Solutions

Nitrogen compounds, frequently originating from agricultural practices, contribute to the prevalence of nitrate in groundwater. Elevated nitrate levels often arise from leaching fertilizers and animal waste. To address this issue, CGWB has emphasized the importance of enhanced groundwater recharge as a means of diluting nitrate contamination. This approach, combined with measures to regulate nitrogen discharge in upper soil layers, is vital for improving groundwater quality.

The Government of India promotes responsible fertilizer use based on recommendations derived from Soil Health Cards (SHCs) as part of the National Project on Soil Health & Fertility Scheme. Additionally, organic farming practices are being encouraged nationally through initiatives like the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) and the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER). These initiatives are aimed at improving soil health and mitigating contamination issues.
