India Pushes for Self-Reliance in Pulses with National Strategy Meeting
In a bid to enhance the nation’s self-sufficiency in pulse production, a crucial National Consultation and Strategy Meeting is slated for Saturday, February 7, 2026. This significant event will take place at the Food Legume Research Platform (FLRP) in Amlaha, located in Sehore district. Chaired by Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the meeting will also feature key figures including Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, Minister of State for Agriculture Shri Bhagirath Choudhary, and agriculture ministers from several prominent pulse-producing states.
Collaboration for Progress
The initiative is organized by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare in partnership with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). The meeting is set to kick off with a plantation drive, followed by demonstrations of innovative farming technologies and new pulse varieties aimed at boosting production.
Inaugurations and Celebrations
During the event, the Union Agriculture Minister will inaugurate a new administrative building, a farmer training center, and advanced laboratories dedicated to plant genomics, tissue culture, breeding, and plant pathology. Attendees can look forward to an exhibition showcasing improved pulse seeds, products, and technologies. Additionally, the launch of the “Pulses Mission Portal” and the distribution of upgraded pulse seeds to progressive farmers are highlights of the program.
Strategies for Improvement
Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan is expected to address attendees, outlining the government’s strategies for increasing pulse production, ensuring minimum support price procurement, enhancing the seed system, and bolstering value chains to elevate farmers’ incomes. Dr. Mohan Yadav will also speak during the gathering, emphasizing the state’s commitment to the cause.
Engaging Stakeholders
Representatives from various states, including Odisha, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh, along with senior officials and agricultural scientists, will engage in discussions on actionable strategies for improving pulse varieties, seed production, disease management, and market linkages. This collaborative effort aims to tackle major pulse crops such as tur, urad, and masoor.
