India Paves the Way for Electric Cooking Adoption
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, hosted the “Commercial Induction Cooking Showcase & Chef Challenge” in New Delhi. The event aimed to promote energy-efficient electric cooking in commercial kitchens and featured the theme, “Accelerating India’s Electric Cooking Ambition: From Technology Demonstration to Real-World Adoption.” Attendees included policymakers, manufacturers, technology providers, chefs, and commercial kitchen operators, all united in the goal of advancing the use of electric cooking technology across India.
Key Speakers Highlight Electric Cooking Benefits
Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Power, served as the Chief Guest, officially launching the event and an exhibition showcasing cutting-edge e-cooking appliances from seven prominent manufacturers. During his address, Agarwal emphasized energy security as the motivation behind India’s transition to electric cooking. He noted the challenges posed by the rising prices of LPG and global conflicts, framing the switch to electric cooking as both a strategic necessity and an operational advantage.
Agarwal pointed to existing government initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA) and the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana as vital resources supporting this transition. However, he also recognized that behavioral attitudes and inadequate infrastructure have hindered broader acceptance. He stressed the importance of raising awareness to boost demand and facilitate the widespread adoption of electric cooking methods.
Focus on E-Cooking Ecosystem Development
Shri Krushna Chandra Panigrahy, Director General of BEE, expressed gratitude to stakeholders from various sectors for their commitment to building a thriving e-cooking ecosystem in India. His keynote address highlighted that the shift towards electric cooking is not merely about cleaner energy; it is also about enhancing energy efficiency. He announced the launch of the Go Electric Commercial Electric Cooking Vendor Directory, a public platform that connects commercial kitchens with credible suppliers of e-cooking solutions.
Panigrahy also revealed that BEE is collaborating with the Bureau of Indian Standards to create a Standards & Labeling framework for commercial induction cooktops. He expressed a vision to evolve from pilot projects to a comprehensive e-cooking market where users have confidence in technology and manufacturers are clear about market demands.
Practical Demonstrations Engage Participants
The event included a Commercial Induction Chef Challenge, where three chefs showcased their culinary skills using induction cooktops. This hands-on demonstration allowed participants to experience the efficiency, ease of use, and precision of induction cooking technology firsthand.
In closing, BEE reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Power, industry leaders, and public sector enterprises, emphasizing the need for a concerted effort toward the adoption of energy-efficient electric cooking technologies across India’s commercial spaces.
