India Launches Scheme to Boost Rare Earth Magnet Production
In a significant move towards enhancing India’s manufacturing capabilities, Union Minister for Heavy Industries & Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, convened a stakeholder consultation meeting today focused on the ‘Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnet’ (REPM). This initiative aims to foster a self-reliant and competitive ecosystem for REPMs, aligning with India’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047. The meeting brought together key officials, including the Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy, and representatives from notable organizations, both domestic and international.
During his inaugural address, Minister Kumaraswamy highlighted the importance of this scheme, encouraging eligible players from various sectors to participate in the bidding process. He underscored that this initiative is crucial for India’s long-term development and called upon stakeholders to leverage this opportunity to contribute to a thriving manufacturing landscape.
Financial Commitment and Duration
The financial framework for the scheme is substantial, with a total outlay of Rs. 7,280 crore. This includes Rs. 6,450 crore allocated for sales-linked incentives and Rs. 750 crore dedicated as capital subsidies. These funds are aimed at establishing a robust 6,000 MTPA capacity for REPM manufacturing in India. The scheme is designed to unfold over a period of seven years, which includes a two-year gestation period for setting up manufacturing facilities and a five-year phase for incentive disbursement based on sales.

As the consultation unfolded, industry representatives actively highlighted their capabilities and expressed keen interest in participating in this scheme. Their engagement signifies a strong willingness to collaborate with the government to further India’s journey towards technological self-sufficiency in critical materials.
