India Launches Prime Minister Research Chair Scheme for Global Talent
The Government of India is set to launch the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026, a national initiative aimed at attracting talented Indian-origin researchers, scientists, and professionals from around the world. This scheme will connect these accomplished individuals with premier higher education institutions, national laboratories, and research centers across the country, fostering a robust research and innovation ecosystem.
The PMRC Scheme focuses on 13 key thematic areas of national priority, including Advanced Computing, Cybersecurity, Healthcare, Biotechnology, and more. This initiative aims to tap into the vast potential of global Indian talent, fostering research that addresses pressing challenges such as climate change and energy sustainability, while advancing technology in various sectors.
Core Structure of the Scheme
The initiative is built on three foundational pillars: Lead Institutions, Host Institutions, and PMRC Fellows. A rigorous selection process will be managed by an Empowered Committee, chaired by the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, ensuring that the research conducted is aligned with national priorities.
PMRC Fellows will be granted fellowship and research funding, along with access to state-of-the-art laboratories and research infrastructure. They will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with leading government institutions in India, enhancing both their professional and academic trajectories.
Eligibility and Opportunities
The scheme offers three distinct categories for engagement: Young Research Fellows for early-career researchers, Senior Research Fellows for seasoned professionals, and Research Chairs for globally renowned research leaders. The initiative seeks to attract top Indian-origin talent, including Indian nationals working abroad, OCI cardholders, and Persons of Indian Origin, who have demonstrated outstanding contributions in the realms of research, technology, and innovation.
Eligible Host Institutions are selected from among top-ranked Government Higher Educational Institutions according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and include premier national laboratories and research entities under key government departments.
Lead Institutions
To facilitate impactful research across the thematic areas, seven premier institutions have been designated as Lead Institutions. These include renowned institutes such as the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru, and others, all of which are recognized for their research and educational excellence.
Applications for both Fellows and Host Institutions will open on June 1, 2026, through the PMRC Portal.
