India Launches Pilot Plant for Rare Earth Magnets in Hyderabad

A new pilot plant dedicated to the production of neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) rare earth permanent magnets has officially been inaugurated at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) in Hyderabad. This facility, established by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), aims to enhance India’s self-reliance in critical materials and bolster the country’s position in the global rare earth supply chain.

Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the DST, inaugurated the plant alongside Dr. R. Vijay, Director of ARCI, and notable figures including Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Former Secretary of DST; Dr. S. K. Jha, former CMD of MIDHANI; and Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, CEO of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). The ceremony also attracted various delegates from industries, national institutes, and other stakeholders.

A Comprehensive Manufacturing Ecosystem

The new pilot plant adopts an end-to-end manufacturing approach, moving from strip-cast alloy to fully sintered magnets. This innovation is expected to foster a robust manufacturing ecosystem that reduces reliance on global supply chains, particularly in the wake of growing demands for clean energy and advanced technologies.

During the inauguration, Prof. Karandikar stated that the establishment of this plant is a vital move towards achieving strategic autonomy in critical materials, especially given the current vulnerabilities in global supply chains. He emphasized the initiative’s importance as India heads towards its vision for Viksit Bharat 2047, focusing on addressing resource constraints and promoting indigenous capabilities in vital technologies.

Collaborative Opportunities in Next-Gen Technologies

Prof. Karandikar also invited industry players, startups, and academic institutions to collaborate in transforming India into a global leader in emerging technologies. Highlighting the importance of diversifying rare earth magnet supply chains—a domain currently dominated by a few countries—he stressed that building indigenous capabilities would enhance supply security and foster technological innovation.

The pilot plant promises to be a pivotal platform for validating technologies, optimizing processes, and promoting collaborative efforts with the industry, thereby supporting the scaling up of indigenous innovations to commercial manufacturing outcomes.

Support for Startups and Advanced Manufacturing

Dr. Kalyanaraman elaborated on the initiatives under Mission for Advancement in High-impact Areas (MAHA), focusing on critical technologies including India’s electric vehicle ecosystem, encouraging private sector involvement in research aimed at technological breakthroughs.

Dr. Vijay mentioned that ARCI is working on creating a comprehensive ‘mineral-to-market’ ecosystem that encompasses the entire process, from rare earth extraction to the magnet manufacturing stage. This effort is vital for enhancing research translation and strengthening industry connections.
