India Launches Nationwide HPV Vaccination for Young Girls
In a major initiative to enhance preventive healthcare, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch a nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Programme for girls aged 14 years. The event will take place tomorrow from Ajmer, Rajasthan, at 11:30 AM. This program is a significant step towards improving women’s health and aligns with the government’s commitment to the “Swastha Nari” vision, which emphasizes prevention, protection, and equity in healthcare.
Aiming for Healthier Futures
Targeting approximately 1.15 crore girls annually, the vaccination will be made available free of charge at designated government health facilities across all states and union territories of India. The vaccine distribution will occur at various locations, including Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, Community Health Centres, Sub-District and District Hospitals, as well as Government Medical Colleges.
Each vaccination session will be overseen by trained medical officers and supported by skilled healthcare teams, ensuring safe administration at all sites. Functional Cold Chain Points (CCPs) will maintain vaccine integrity, and the vaccination locations will be connected to government health facilities for immediate support should any rare adverse events occur following immunization.
Voluntary Participation and Informed Consent
The vaccination campaign will be entirely voluntary, with consent from parents or guardians required before the vaccine can be administered. The initiative will operate in a mission mode over a three-month period, providing eligible girls with daily access to vaccination at designated facilities. Following this phase, vaccines will be available on regular immunization days.
Addressing Cervical Cancer in India
Cervical cancer poses a significant health challenge in India, ranking as the second most common cancer among women. According to GLOBOCAN 2022, over 120,000 new cases and nearly 80,000 deaths occur each year. Scientific studies show that persistent infections from high-risk types of HPV, particularly types 16 and 18, are responsible for more than 80% of cervical cancer cases in the country. The HPV vaccination program is designed to prevent these infections, thereby reducing the risk of cancer.
The program will utilize the Gardasil vaccine, which protects against types 16 and 18 (associated with cervical cancer) as well as types 6 and 11. Recognized as one of the most thoroughly studied vaccines, HPV vaccines have shown effectiveness rates between 93–100% in preventing cancer caused by vaccine-targeted HPV types.
Global Context and National Coordination
India’s initiative aligns with international efforts, as over 160 countries have incorporated HPV vaccination into their national immunization programs. Notably, more than 90 countries have adopted single-dose schedules to enhance coverage and efficiency. Numerous nations have documented significant reductions in HPV infection rates and cervical cancer incidence following widespread vaccination efforts.
To ensure a steady supply of high-quality vaccines, the India Launches Nationwide HPV Vaccination for Young Girlsof India has collaborated with GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, securing supplies through a transparent procurement mechanism. State and union territory officials have been trained for a seamless rollout.
During the launch in Ajmer, representatives from all states and territories will join virtually, including Chief Ministers and health officials. The nationwide HPV vaccination program exemplifies effective governance, combining scientific evidence, policy commitment, and readiness for implementation to positively impact public health.
