India Launches Modified UDAN to Boost Regional Air Connectivity
The Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit the **Modified UDAN** scheme, aiming to enhance regional air connectivity for a decade, beginning from FY 2026-27 through FY 2035-36. With a substantial budget provision of Rs. 28,840 crore from the Government of India, this initiative seeks to uplift underdeveloped and underserved regions across the nation.
By bolstering regional air services, the scheme is expected to stimulate economic growth, promote tourism, and facilitate trade in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. The initiative will not only make air travel more accessible for everyday citizens but will also improve emergency healthcare and response capabilities in remote and hilly areas. Additionally, it aims to enhance the sustainability and viability of regional airports and airlines while championing the indigenous aerospace sector in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Key Components of the Modified UDAN Scheme
This revitalized program encompasses several vital elements designed to transform India into a competitive global aviation player:
- Development of Aerodromes: The plan includes upgrading 100 airports from currently unserved airstrips. This venture aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and involves an investment of Rs. 12,159 crore over the next eight years.
- Operation & Maintenance of Aerodromes: To alleviate the financial burden of ongoing maintenance costs, the scheme provides operational support for three years, estimated at Rs. 2,577 crore for 441 aerodromes.
- Modern Helipads Development: With a focus on improving connectivity in challenging terrains, Rs. 3,661 crore will be allocated for developing 200 modern helipads, particularly in remote and aspirational districts.
- Viability Gap Funding: The initiative sets aside Rs. 10,043 crore over the next decade to support airline operators as they develop routes under the Regional Connectivity Scheme.
- Aircraft Acquisition for Atmanirbhar Bharat: The program aims to procure two HAL Dhruv helicopters and two HAL Dornier aircraft to meet the operational needs in tough terrains.
Background of the Scheme
The original UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) initiative was launched in October 2016, targeting affordable air travel while creating vital connections to smaller cities. Over nearly a decade, this program has successfully operationalized 663 routes across 95 airports, heliports, and water aerodromes, conducting over 3.41 lakh flights and serving 162.47 lakh passengers. The initiative has significantly improved connectivity in remote regions, fostering growth in tourism, access to healthcare, and emergency services. The foundation established by this successful scheme has now paved the way for the forthcoming Modified UDAN initiative.
