India Launches Initiatives for Sustainable Textile Production
In response to the increasing global focus on environmentally sustainable practices, the Indian government has announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the textile industry’s green technology adoption and improving overall competitiveness. These measures are set to bolster market access, strengthen investor confidence, and promote both environmental and economic resilience.
Formation of ESG Task Force
The government has established an Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Task Force, which acts as a platform for meaningful discussions on sustainable production and certification. This Task Force has enabled numerous industry-oriented programs designed to share best practices and knowledge among participants, facilitated by initiatives like the Circular Samvaad and Cluster Exchange Mechanism.
Promotion of Energy Efficiency
Under the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (ATUFS), which was active until March 31, 2022, the government has supported more than 1,117 energy-efficient machines to enhance water and energy efficiency in textile manufacturing. Furthermore, the Integrated Processing Development Scheme (IPDS) has seen the approval of six Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) employing Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) technology.
Pilot Projects for Sustainable Practices
To raise awareness and cultivate skills in sustainable production methods, the government has initiated various pilot projects nationwide. These projects focus on eliminating hazardous chemicals from the textile value chain, the production of eco-friendly textiles, waste management, life cycle analysis, and natural dyeing techniques. One significant pilot, ‘Eliminating Hazardous Chemicals from Textile Fashion Supply Chain in India,’ targets 400 factories across eight clusters. It aims to mitigate 147,000 tCO2eq and reduce hazardous chemical use by over 10,530 tonnes.
Investment in R&D
The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) has also sanctioned several research and development projects that emphasize environmentally sustainable technologies and materials, reflecting the government’s commitment to innovation in this crucial sector.
Future Initiatives
Additionally, during her budget speech for 2026-27, Hon’ble Finance Minister announced an Integrated Programme for the textiles sector, which includes the Tex-Eco Initiative. This program aims to promote globally competitive and sustainable textiles and apparel.
