India Launches Historic Mineral Exploration Auction

The Ministry of Mines, in partnership with the Government of Goa, has launched India’s first-ever auction of Exploration Licences (ELs), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at tapping into the country’s vast mineral resources. The event was attended by Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, and Goa’s Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant. This auction includes 13 blocks for critical minerals such as Rare Earth Elements (REE), Zinc, and Copper, and is expected to enhance private sector participation while reducing import dependency.
Significance of the Auction
During the launch, Union Minister Shri G. Kishan Reddy emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “For the first time, India is opening up systematic early-stage exploration through a structured and transparent auction process.” This reform is designed to accelerate the discovery of critical minerals, boost investor confidence, and align with India’s ambitions for a self-reliant mineral ecosystem. The auction process will be conducted online, ensuring transparency and accessibility for all participants. Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant praised the government’s efforts, highlighting Goa’s rich mining heritage and the commitment to responsible, technology-driven mineral development. He noted that these reforms will not only unlock the mineral potential of India but also create sustainable mining opportunities in the region. The integration of advanced technologies in mineral exploration is expected to play a crucial role in this transformation.
AI Hackathon to Drive Innovation
As part of the event, the Hackathon on “Mineral Targeting using Artificial Intelligence” was inaugurated. This initiative aims to utilize AI-driven techniques and geoscience data to identify new mineral-rich zones, particularly those that are concealed or deep-seated. Participants will develop AI models using various datasets, including geophysics, geochemistry, and remote sensing data, focusing on critical minerals like REE, Nickel-Platinum Group Elements (Ni-PGE), and Copper. The hackathon is expected to foster innovation within India’s exploration ecosystem, enhancing data-driven mineral discovery. By leveraging artificial intelligence, the initiative aims to streamline the exploration process and improve the accuracy of mineral identification, ultimately contributing to the country’s mineral self-reliance.
Encouraging Private Sector Participation
To further promote private sector involvement in mineral exploration, Union Minister Shri G. Kishan Reddy and Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant awarded certificates to three newly recognized Private Exploration Agencies (NPEAs): Earthenviro Lab Private Limited, Ocean Drilling and Exploration Pvt. Ltd, and Enkay Enviro Services Pvt. Ltd. This recognition is part of the government’s broader strategy to encourage private investment and expertise in the mining sector.
Additionally, a review meeting chaired by Shri G. Kishan Reddy included discussions with various stakeholders, including private companies, prospective bidders, and environmental experts. The focus was on promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices while leveraging technology for effective mineral exploration. The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring ecological balance in Goa while advancing its mining initiatives.
