India Launches Gyan Bharatam Mission to Preserve Manuscript Heritage

The Government of India has unveiled the Gyan Bharatam Mission, a significant initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture. This mission is set to embark on a comprehensive effort to survey, document, conserve, digitize, and make accessible the vast repository of manuscripts housed in various academic institutions, museums, libraries, and private collections throughout the country. The government has earmarked an impressive Rs. 491.66 crore for this ambitious project, covering the period from 2025 to 2031.

Nationwide Network for Manuscript Conservation

Under the Gyan Bharatam Mission, a nationwide network of Cluster Centers (CCs) and Independent Centers (ICs) is being established. So far, more than 40 of these centers have been onboarded, with 28 states and Union Territories (UTs) also designated as Nodal Coordinating Authorities for implementation efforts within their regions. This collaborative approach aims to enhance the scope and effectiveness of manuscript-related activities across India.

Utilizing Technology for Preservation

The mission is backed by various technical partners who specialize in tasks such as metadata creation and integration with the National Digital Repository (NDR). Advanced technologies, including AI-integrated digital platforms, will be employed alongside high-standard digitization practices to safeguard India’s rich manuscript heritage. The initiative will utilize scientific conservation and restoration methods, ensuring that manuscripts are preserved using both preventive and curative techniques.

Digital Access and Data Security

One of the key objectives of the Gyan Bharatam Mission is to make India’s manuscript wealth accessible on a pan-Indian level. The digitization process will be comprehensive, with each manuscript accompanied by detailed metadata and thorough documentation, providing necessary authenticity and traceability. Digital copies will be securely stored in the NDR, which offers instant access for researchers and scholars. Enhanced data security measures, including the use of LTO-9 tapes and cloud-based backup solutions, have also been incorporated to protect against data loss and ensure disaster recovery.

Complementary Efforts by National Archives of India

The mission aligns with ongoing large-scale digitization initiatives undertaken by the National Archives of India (NAI). These efforts focus on creating high-resolution digital copies of historical records, complete with checksum verification to maintain integrity and authenticity. This systematic approach serves to bolster not only the preservation of manuscripts but also the broader historical narrative of India.
