India Launches ₹10,000 Crore Fund to Boost Startups
The Indian government has launched the Startup India Fund of Funds 2.0 (Startup India FoF 2.0), establishing a significant corpus of ₹10,000 crore aimed at fostering venture and growth capital for the country’s startup ecosystem. This initiative seeks to continue the momentum set by the previous Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS 1.0), which was introduced in 2016 under the Startup India Action Plan to address funding shortages and stimulate domestic investment in startups.
New Opportunities for Startups
With a focus on expanding funding avenues, the Startup India FoF 2.0 is designed to make commitments to selected Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) over the course of the 16th and 17th Finance Commission cycles. The investments will particularly prioritize deep tech startups, early-stage companies supported by smaller AIFs, as well as technology-driven and innovative manufacturing ventures.
Structured Selection and Oversight
This new fund will implement a structured selection process for AIFs, which involves screening by a dedicated Venture Capital Investment Committee (VCIC). This committee will consist of seasoned professionals from the startup environment. Furthermore, an Empowered Committee (EC) will oversee the implementation and effectiveness of the scheme, ensuring proper governance and oversight.
Strengthening India’s Economic Landscape
Designed to enhance India’s innovation-driven growth trajectory, the Startup India FoF 2.0 aims to support startups in developing globally competitive technologies, products, and solutions. The scheme is expected to bolster the nation’s economic resilience, increase manufacturing capabilities, and generate high-quality employment opportunities, while positioning India as a prominent innovation hub on the global stage.
Implementation and Future Prospects
The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) will initiate the operations of this Fund as the Implementation Agency, and an additional domestic agency will also be engaged to aid in executing this initiative. The Startup India FoF 2.0 will channel funds into SEBI-registered AIFs that invest in startups recognized by the Central Government.
This initiative aligns with India’s vision of becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to empowering entrepreneurs, nurturing innovation, and unlocking the vast potential of India’s startup ecosystem.
