India Invests in Partnerships for Critical Minerals, Rare Earths, and Semiconductor Chips

India has launched the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), set to run from 2024-25 to 2030-31. This initiative aims to secure the country’s supply chain for critical minerals and rare earth elements amid rising geopolitical uncertainties. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Indonesia, he announced plans for India to invest in the manufacturing of steel, nickel, and rare earth permanent magnets in the region.

Strengthening Supply Chains

Modi emphasized the importance of supply chain resilience in technology. He stated that an agreement was reached to enhance cooperation in critical minerals and steel production. “A new beginning is being made in partnerships between our companies regarding stainless steel and rare-earth magnets,” he noted. This collaboration is part of a broader strategy to bolster India’s position in the global market for essential minerals.

The NCMM goes beyond traditional mining efforts. It aims to enhance India’s energy security, accelerate industrial development, and promote technological self-reliance. The mission encompasses a range of minerals, including lithium for electric vehicles and rare earth elements crucial for defense technologies. By securing these resources, India seeks to address its future needs effectively.

Global Partnerships

In the past two years, India has established connections with 35 countries to create a unified supply chain for rare earth and critical minerals. Key partnerships include agreements with Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States, among others. These collaborations focus on various aspects, from critical minerals cooperation to semiconductor frameworks and rare earth recovery from electronic waste.

Critical minerals are vital for economic growth and national security. They are essential in sectors such as clean energy, advanced electronics, transportation, telecommunications, and defense. As global demand for these resources increases, countries are prioritizing the establishment of reliable supply chains to mitigate potential disruptions.
