India Intensifies Free Trade Agreement Efforts

India is actively pursuing free trade agreements (FTAs) with numerous global partners, including the United States and the European Union, as part of its strategy to bolster economic ties amid rising geopolitical tensions. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced these negotiations during the Ficci annual general meeting in New Delhi, emphasizing the importance of collaborating with “trusted partners” in an increasingly complex global trade environment. With discussions ongoing with approximately 50 countries, Goyal highlighted the urgency of these efforts, especially in light of recent tariff increases imposed by the U.S.

Engagement with Gulf Cooperation Council

Minister Goyal noted that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain, is eager to engage in trade discussions with India. He pointed out that India has already established a comprehensive trade agreement with the UAE, and negotiations with Oman are nearing completion. Both Bahrain and Qatar have also expressed interest in enhancing trade relations. Goyal stated, “The whole six-nation group would like to engage,” indicating a collective desire for broader economic collaboration. Additionally, India is in active discussions with New Zealand and continues to negotiate with the U.S. and the 27-nation EU, aiming to finalize a bilateral trade deal by the end of the year.

Reviewing Existing Agreements

India is also reassessing its trade agreements with ASEAN and South Korea to achieve a more balanced approach. The ASEAN bloc comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Goyal mentioned that India is working with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and has recently initiated negotiations with Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Furthermore, talks with Israel are expected to commence soon. In a significant development, Canada and India are set to resume discussions on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) next week, with the goal of increasing bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030.

Interest from Other Regions

In addition to the GCC and Canada, the South African Customs Union (SACU), which includes South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, and Eswatini, along with the Mercosur bloc (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay), has shown interest in initiating trade negotiations with India. These agreements aim to reduce or eliminate import duties on goods exchanged between the countries, facilitate the movement of professionals, and encourage investment flows. Currently, India has FTAs in place with several countries, including Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Australia, which cover tariff reductions and investment facilitation.

Strategic Importance of FTAs

The ongoing negotiations for FTAs reflect India’s strategic approach to enhancing its global trade footprint. As global trade dynamics shift, Goyal’s remarks underscore the necessity of establishing strong economic partnerships to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions and tariff disputes. By engaging with a diverse array of countries and regions, India aims to create a robust trade network that can withstand external pressures and foster sustainable economic growth. The government’s proactive stance in pursuing these agreements highlights its commitment to strengthening India’s position in the global market.
