India Increases Domestic LPG Production to 60% in Response to Middle East Tensions
India’s domestic production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has reached a significant milestone, now fulfilling nearly 60% of the nation’s demand. This development comes as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt global energy markets. In response to these challenges, the Indian government is implementing measures to ensure a steady supply of fuel, including a shift from LPG to piped natural gas (PNG), which has seen over 400,000 consumers make the switch in just five weeks.
Government Initiatives to Ensure Fuel Supply
Sujata Sharma, the joint secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, provided insights into the government’s strategies during a recent briefing. She highlighted that the expansion of PNG coverage is progressing rapidly, aided by cooperation from various state and Union Territory administrations. In the last five weeks, approximately 405,000 new LPG connections have been converted to gas, with over 441,000 new consumers registered. This shift aims to reduce the country’s reliance on LPG while ensuring that households receive uninterrupted fuel supplies.
Despite the geopolitical tensions affecting global energy prices, officials have assured the public that domestic LPG demand is being met adequately. Distributors currently hold sufficient stocks, and no shortages have been reported across the nation. The recovery of commercial LPG supplies, which had previously faced challenges, has improved to nearly 70%. Essential services, including hospitals, educational institutions, and food services, continue to receive priority in fuel allocation.
Support for Vulnerable Groups
In an effort to assist vulnerable populations, the government has doubled the supply of 5 kg LPG cylinders and relaxed documentation requirements to facilitate access. Sharma noted that this initiative has led to the sale of nearly 100,000 cylinders, significantly improving availability for those in need. Since March 14, commercial LPG sales have reached approximately 106,000 tonnes, with daily consumption stabilizing between 6,000 and 6,500 tonnes.
The government has also intensified outreach efforts, conducting over 2,400 awareness campaigns in the past week. These initiatives aim to inform consumers about available fuel options and enhance access to energy resources. By simplifying the process for obtaining smaller LPG cylinders, the government is ensuring that more households can secure the fuel they require.
Natural Gas Supply and Industrial Support
In the natural gas sector, priority remains focused on domestic consumption. Industries connected to the gas grid are currently receiving about 80% of their requirements, while supplies to the fertilizer sector have been restored to 95%. City gas distribution companies have been instructed to maintain uninterrupted supply to critical sectors, including food processing, cold storage, and healthcare.
Officials have confirmed that crude oil inventories are adequate, and refineries are operating at optimal levels. Additionally, approximately 800 tonnes per day of petroleum products are being allocated to the pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries to support essential manufacturing activities. These measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure that the energy needs of the country are met, even amid ongoing global disruptions.
