India Hosts Workshop on AI Governance and Competition
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) and the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) joined forces to present a pivotal Workshop titled “Artificial Intelligence, Competition & Governance” on December 19, 2025, in New Delhi. This event, serving as a precursor to the upcoming India–AI Impact Summit 2026, underscores India’s dedication to establishing a balanced and innovative framework for artificial intelligence governance.
Senior Leaders Discuss AI Challenges
The workshop gathered a diverse range of participants, including senior policymakers, regulatory officials, industry leaders, and academic experts. Together, they engaged in discussions about the fast-evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the realms of competition, consumer protection, and governance. The dialogue addressed critical challenges that arise with AI implementation, emphasizing the necessity for coordinated regulatory efforts while striving to maintain competitive markets and foster innovation.
Prominent figures such as Smt. Ravneet Kaur, Chairperson of the CCI, and Shri Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary for the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) and CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, played key roles in the Inaugural Session. The session also featured Smt. Dipti Gaur Mukherjee, Secretary of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, marking its significance.
Opening Insights into AI’s Market Role
During the opening remarks, Smt. Sangeeta Gupta, Senior Vice President of Nasscom, outlined the transformative potential of AI within markets and the corresponding need for robust governance frameworks. The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Shri Ashish Aggarwal, Vice President of Public Policy at Nasscom.
The workshop continued with three plenary sessions, diving deep into various aspects of AI governance and regulatory collaboration. These sessions examined the current AI market, competition dynamics, and the pressing issues of compliance, transparency, ethics, and the responsible use of AI in a competitive environment. A notable highlight was the presentation of CCI’s comprehensive market study on AI and competition.
Deliberations on Regulatory Cooperation
The first plenary session, “AI Governance, Consumer Protection, and Regulatory Coordination,” was moderated by Smt. Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs. The second session, which focused on “Understanding the AI Market and Competition Landscape,” was led by Chairperson Smt. Ravneet Kaur. The third session concluded with discussions on “Compliance, Transparency, Ethics and Responsible AI for Competitive Markets,” chaired by Smt. Sangeeta Gupta.
Shri Anil Agrawal, a member of the Competition Commission of India, provided closing remarks, reflecting on the need for a collaborative and risk-aware regulatory approach. He emphasized that such strategies are essential to ensuring that AI-driven innovation proceeds in alignment with competition principles, consumer welfare, and the broader public interest.
