India Hosts Seminar on UAS Warfare Strategies

The Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS) held a pivotal seminar today in New Delhi, focusing on “UAS Warfare with Special Focus on Counter-UAS.” General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), delivered the keynote address, highlighting the significant role of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in transforming modern warfare. He emphasized the need for a unified approach in understanding and countering drone threats, as well as the importance of self-reliance in India’s defense capabilities.

Key Insights from General Chauhan

During his address, General Chauhan outlined the evolving landscape of warfare, driven by advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence. He pointed out that UAS are becoming increasingly disruptive due to their speed and cost-effectiveness. The CDS stressed the necessity for the Indian Armed Forces to develop a common language regarding UAS and drones, which includes defining their classifications. He identified four generations of UAS and advocated for the creation of comprehensive Counter-UAS systems. Furthermore, he called for collaboration among military users, designers, and manufacturers to ensure a self-reliant defense framework for India.

Showcasing India’s UAS Advancements

The seminar highlighted India’s strides in UAS and Counter-UAS technologies, aligning with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative aimed at promoting indigenous development. Experts engaged in strategic dialogues about the country’s drone requirements and the integration of AI in drone warfare. They also shared insights from ongoing global conflicts, emphasizing the need for India to enhance its drone capabilities. Discussions included the growing threats posed by drones along India’s borders and in the Indian Ocean Region, underscoring the urgent need for advanced detection and neutralization systems.

Collaboration Between Military and Industry

Leading representatives from the defense industry, including JSW UAV Ltd, Mahindra Defence, and Adani Defence Systems, showcased innovative solutions for countering UAS threats. The seminar facilitated discussions on a “Whole-of-Nation” approach to countering drone threats, which included recommendations for legal frameworks and advancements in electronic warfare. The collaboration between military and industry leaders aims to strengthen India’s defense posture against emerging drone technologies.

Engaging Experts and Stakeholders

The event brought together prominent military figures, including Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani and Air Marshal SP Dharkar, who chaired various discussions on future counter-drone strategies. The seminar served as a platform for experts from the Indian Armed Forces, strategic policymakers, and industry leaders to exchange ideas on the latest advancements in UAS and counter-UAS strategies. An accompanying exhibition showcased cutting-edge drone technologies, reinforcing India’s commitment to becoming a leader in modern warfare capabilities.
