India Greenlights Export of Additional 25 Lakh Tonnes of Wheat
The Government of India has made a significant move by approving the export of an additional 25 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to providing fair returns for farmers while ensuring stability in domestic markets. The approval comes after a thorough evaluation of wheat production, stock levels, and pricing trends.
Surge in Wheat Acreage
During the Rabi season of 2026, wheat cultivation area has expanded to around 334.17 lakh hectares, compared to 328.04 lakh hectares in the previous year. This increase signifies growing confidence among farmers in wheat farming, bolstered by a guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) and effective procurement systems. Such factors suggest the potential for another abundant harvest.
Production Estimates and Export Approvals
The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released its Second Advance Estimates on March 10, 2026, projecting the wheat production for the 2025–26 period to reach approximately 1202 LMT. Given this positive outlook and sufficient stock levels, the government found it prudent to authorize additional wheat exports.
Earlier this year, the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) had already sanctioned the export of 5 LMT of wheat products in January, followed by another 5 LMT of wheat products and 25 LMT of wheat in February. Cumulatively, with the recent approvals, a total of 50 LMT of wheat and 10 LMT of wheat products are now allowed for export.

This latest export approval is expected to enhance market liquidity, enable effective stock management, and prevent distress selling during the peak harvest period. Additionally, it aims to stabilize domestic wheat prices, thereby improving farmers’ incomes while maintaining food security for the nation.
