India Gears Up for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan
In a significant step towards the upcoming 2026 Asian Games, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, convened a high-level meeting at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) headquarters on Thursday. The Asian Games, set to unfold in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from September 19 to October 4, will see India striving to outdo its previous medal tally. Senior officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, SAI, and other stakeholders presented updates on India’s preparations, with an emphasis on providing athletes with comprehensive support to excel in the continental competition.
Committee Established for Strategic Planning
A dedicated 15-member committee, which includes key figures such as Shri Hari Ranjan Rao, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, and PT Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association, has been actively working to ensure effective planning for the Games. Since December 2022, the committee has conducted four meetings to align strategies for training, logistics, athlete welfare, and competition readiness, focusing on a streamlined roadmap for India’s representation at the event.
Government’s Commitment to Athlete Welfare
During the meeting, Dr. Mandaviya reinforced the government’s commitment to athlete welfare and performance. “Our athletes are our top priority. Every possible support, from training and sports science to logistics, kit support, food support, and medical care, will be provided so that they can prepare without distractions and deliver their best at the Asian Games,” he stated, underlining the aim to enhance India’s medal tally.
Coordinated Preparations Highlighted
The Minister further stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among all parties involved. Effective preparation, strong support systems, and timely planning are seen as essential for achieving India’s aspirations at the Games. To ensure athletes and support staff are fully equipped, a Nodal Officer for the Asian Games Technical Handbook has been assigned to each National Sports Federation (NSF). These officers will educate athletes, coaches, and support staff on discipline-specific details needed for optimal performance.
Strategic Planning for Logistical Support
The logistical framework for the Aichi-Nagoya Games is particularly unique, following a five-cluster competition model spread across various locations. This requires meticulous planning for travel, medical support, and recovery measures. To help athletes acclimatize, makeshift container units will be established at SAI centers in Patiala and Bengaluru, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the living conditions expected at the Games.
Upcoming Goals and Preparations
With over 700 Indian athletes anticipated to compete in more than 40 sports disciplines, the nation’s target is to surpass the 106 medals won at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2022. The meeting concluded with a review of previous reconnaissance visits to Japan and the planning for final arrangements, ensuring all logistical and operational needs are met.
The next committee meeting is slated for March 20, where vital discussions regarding team sizes, travel logistics, and overall operational readiness will take place, paving the way for a robust Indian presence at the continental sporting festival.
